Earlier this year, The Hudson Valley Seed Library teamed up with eleven New York State artists to create what they call Art Packs, heirloom seeds packaged in wrappers so pretty that you'll want to frame them. Each artist created a painting or drawing to represent the plant that the seeds would someday become. According to HVSL, the Art Packs "celebrate the beauty and interpersonal connections inherent in heirloom gardening and seed-saving, and they reflect our region's vibrant creative culture." They cost $3.50 per pack. Not only are these seed packets adorned with miniature artworks, HVSL also contracted TreeoDesign, a local package design company, to create a unique package for the seeds. The flower-shaped packets unfold like petals to reveal the seeds within. The paper is recycled and the inks are vegetable-based, which is in keeping with HVSL's back-to-the-earth ethos. When they introduced the line in winter there were 13 designs available, but five themes have already sold out. So hurry and order yours now before they're all gone!

Most of the seeds can still be grown this year (it's too late for the pepper and tomatoes), but you can also save your seeds for next year. Just be sure to keep them in a cool, dry place until you plant them.
