With times tough and budgets tight, we all know the drill: Frivolous spending gets the kibosh. For those of us who get more excited by Anthropologie home sales than their clothing breaks, this cutting back hits home. Literally.

While decorating with books may be a concept that's been around as long as the paper mills that make them, it's definitely one worth revisiting. Why? It can be cheap, pretty, and finding said books can be a fun, often challenging mission.

Here, a collection of some of our all-time favorite ways to work books into your home style...on the cheap.

A Step Above the Ordinary
Not recommended for anyone with kids or in need of a stairway railing, this clever idea was found over at Design *Sponge. Sent in by readers, this alternative stairway railing is made by drilling holes into book then threading them with long metal pipes. Crazy? Maybe. Cool? Oh so very.

What's Old is New Again
No need to give an old dresser the boot. Country Living pulled together this ingenious solution with a trick they learned from Monica Ewing of Crafynest.com. Make a modular storage system with dresser drawer, paint them, line them with pretty paper and then dress them with a collection of books. Instructions here.

Hey You Up There!
Seriously? This wild yet completely awesome contraption is made with painted planks of plywood that are nailed to the supports for the above loft. Find it over at Apartment Therapy Los Angeles. Can't say this could be pulled off in all homes, but hey, E for effort if you can.

Color, Color All Around!
Well, there's organized, and then there's organized. If this wasn't so gosh darn pretty, this bookshelf would likely make us feel bad about our disheveled bookshelves (and closets too while we're at it). But man, this here is practically a work of art. Color us envious.

Making the Most of it
Should you be fortunate enough to have an ornamental fireplace in your home, here's one heck of a way to makeit functional: books! Lots of 'em. Stash them in there, stack them up, cram them in. They'll look great. Love this look, majorly. More get-organized solutions like this one can be found over at unclutterer.com

A Pop Here, A Pop There
Nothing like a burst of color in an otherwise neutral palette to brighten a room. Who'd have thought it could be done with books and books alone? Found on interior designer Phoebe Howard's website and on the blog Cote de Texas.
