Have you ever looked at your bedroom floor and realized that you can't see your rug? Do you wince at the thought of squeezing in yet another piece of furniture?
Well, before you go knocking down walls or browsing the real estate classifieds, try some of the following space-saving solutions.

1) Save nightstand space with wall-mounted lamps, such as the
classic George Nelson bubble lamp sconces, $375, at Modernica. A budget-friendly option are these great
BASISK sconces from IKEA, just $12.99 each.

2) Try adding a storage chest at the end of your bed that doubles as a bed for your furry friend. It's also a great place to put on your socks and shoes before you leave for work. Home Decorators Collection has a great selection of storage benches, like
this Hampton Bay Lift-Top Storage Bench, $229 to $269.

3) Under-bed drawers add storage to what may have previously been dead space for dust bunnies and sock mates. Grab some inexpensive plastic bins, like
these under-bed storage boxes for $50 at IKEA or opt for an entire piece of furniture, such as the
Stratton Bed from Pottery Barn, a much pricier solution starting at $1599.

4) Use a wall-mounted shelf or a bookcase as a nightstand. Take a hint from urban planning and build up. Try floor to ceiling
LACK shelves, or this configuration of the
Elfa system from The Container Store for $217.

5) Use a small writing desk as a nightstand, like this sold-out but
lovely traditional writing desk at Overstock. (They often sell similar styles.) It even doubles as a makeup table! For the modern folks, try the understated
Parsons desk from West Elm for $299.
