Bring the Beach To You

A few vases in teals and blues will remind you of the beach. Photo: West Elm

I recently moved to Los Angeles to a sleepy Midwestern town, and I'm in serious beach withdrawal this summer. When I lay my head down each night, I secretly dream of mosquito-free living and the cool, ocean breeze I left behind.

Fortunately, I plan to bring the ocean directly into my living room with a few fun, beachy changes that I'll switch up for the summer. Feeling coast-sick yourself, try these tips and treats for ocean-infused living.

Some of the options that I suggest are pricey, and several probably don't make sense to buy if you're only using them for a few months. Still, there are crafty ideas to be gleaned from all these products. (Think: Don't buy those coral Thomas Paul pillows -- Make them!)

Or just book a trip to the beach. Surf's up!

Get inspired: Inject beach house style into any living room. Photo: (Clockwise, from left to right): Pebbles to Sand, Burke Decor, Target, Pottery Barn, West Elm, From House to Home

1) Capiz is a fantastic way to add both texture and movement to any room. Try a capiz shell lamp, chandelier or strand in any room; it will reflect the light in such a beautiful way.

2) For colors, try shifting to teals, blues and whites with a few wooden accents. Add color to a room on the cheap with a few small accessories (I love these beach glass vases from West Elm.

3) Need storage?
Turn this faux driftwood ladder into a magazine rack, or try a few rattan baskets.

4) Swap out a few throw pillows for these coral designs by Thomas Paul.

5) If you're in for a more permanent look, try painting the floorboards white. You'll be amazed at how lighter and airy everything else will seem in comparison.

6) Add a thick, chunky jute rug to tie the look together -- This Pottery Barn basketweave design is my favorite!
