Joel Pirela is a true collector. I know him best as the "Chair Commando" behind the Blue Ant Studio blog, and as contributor to Design Milk, but beyond all that he's one of my decorating idols. I got the chance to ask him about his almost-complete George Nelson clock collection, which he proudly displays on the living room wall in his home.

He currently has seven out of the eight Nelson clocks on the wall. He is still pursuing the Steering Wheel clock, also done by Nelson.

Why Nelson Clocks, I asked?

"Well, he represents, along with the Eameses, a multi-tasking design genius from that era," says Joel. "The clocks range from funny and playful to serious and complicated masterpieces."

He's collected seven editions made by Vitra plus one 1959 vintage clock. They include:

- White ball clock
- Orange ball clock
- Black asterisk
- Eye clock
- Petal clock
- Block clock
- Sunburst walnut clock
- Hexagonal vintage clock made by Howard Miller and designed by Nelson

"In retrospect, if I would have saved the money invested in the clocks, I could get a motorcycle by now," he jokes, "But I love my clocks and they are the major piece of conversation to any guests that I have at my home!"

Check out some more pics of Joel's collection, including his fantastic living room decor:
