Could this be the home office of the future? Photo: OfficePOD

Imagine your commute is just walking from your back door into your garden. With more people working from home offices, the innovative UK-based company OfficePOD has come up with an ingenious idea for a workspace that physically separates your home office from, well, your home. It's an outdoor "pod," similar to a shed, but with modern conveniences and carefully chosen materials to allow for comfort. This option might be ideal for some people who find it difficult to work from their houses due to distractions. OfficePOD creates a mental barrier between home and work, even though it's right in your own backyard.

The cube is about 6' x 6', more than enough room to store your files, do your computing and other desk work. OfficePOD is offering their product to employees and employers. According to OfficePOD, it costs about £4,000 (about $6,525) in commuting costs per year for the average commuter. Additionally, employers pay about £9,000/year (about $14,680) to accommodate employees. Could one of these units save a company money? Maybe. OfficePOD will lease the units at £5,000 ($8,100) per year, a significant savings to both employer and employee.

While the units aren't available in the U.S. (the company is working on that), I wonder if this type of office is the wave of the future.

And it begs the question: Would you want to work in one of these pre-fab offices? I think working in one of these pods would be like an adventure in my own backyard. I could take breaks playing fetch with the dogs, breathe in the fresh air and feel a little less cooped up. The only times I think this might be challenging is during humid, rainy or snowy weather. I'd be interested to know the additional costs to heat or air condition one of these units in addition to your home. What do you think?
