More than likely, your most foolproof cleaning tip will not be found in a mass-produced instruction booklet. It was probably passed to you through world-of-mouth from a close friend or family member and you don't know how you lived without it! My mom shared the power of Ivory soap with me a few years ago -- rub it on soiled clothing before you put it in the washing machine and that stain is guaranteed to come out! Last week, we invited readers to submit their best cleaning tips to ShelterPop. We've compiled our favorites in the photo gallery below. Feel free to leave additional ideas in the comments section. Happy cleaning!

SOME OF THESE ARE REALLY GOOD TIPS! I ALREADY USE THE WASHING MACHINE TO WASH THE SHOWER CURTAIN, IF IT'S A CLEAR CURTAIN, ADDING A LITTLE BLEACH WILL GET RID OF ALL THE SOAP SCUM. I WOULD HOWEVER LIKE TO ADD SOMETHING TO THE VINEGAR GLASS CLEANER: A LOT OF PROFFESIONAL AUTO DETAILERS USE THIS RECIPE- IN A SPRAY BOTTLE ADD 1 CUP- ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, 1 CUP WHITE VINEGAR, FILL THE REST OF THE WAY WITH "DISTILLED" WATER. THIS SAME RECIPE IS USEDE TO DETAIL EXOTIC AND CUSTOM CARS. AND LAST, WITH ALL DO RESPECT TO "JENNIFER," THE VINEGAR COFFEE MAKER CLEANER IS PRETTY MUCH KNOWN BY EVERYONE. BUT, GOOD JOB ANYWAY.

Instead of using newspapers, etc for cleaning your windows, go with a squeegee. Spray the window with any cleaning product of your choice, Go over this with a sponge, and then just squeegee the window dry. Just watch a window cleaning doing a storefront window. The squeegee does the job faster, and the windows stay cleaner longer.

A great tip to save time when cleaning the house is to carry a plastic box with you, and some grocery store bags. As you go from room to room, collect in the box things that belong elsewhere, and place them using one bag per room. When you move on, you can place the items where they belong and save lots of time. Once the bag is empty, if it doesn't have any holes, you can use it as the garbage bag in the rooms.

I like to use my power washer to deep clean area rugs and throw rugs to big for the washing machine. No kidding! On a warm, sunny day, I lay the rugs out on the clean dry driveway, sprinkle a very small amount of dry detergent, and spray away. Hang to dry. Very effectively cleans every bit of dirt. I even tried it on my upholstered couches and couch cushions. Sprinkle detergent (less than for rugs), and spray away starting from the top. Clean cushions separately. Let dry in well ventilated location and its ready for use by evening.
Now, on to using the leaf blower for powerful cleaning.....

To clean the microwave oven quickly and easily: Squeeze the juice of one lemon into a small bowl of water, about 1 to 1-1/2 cups. Microwave on high until the water boils. Leave the door shut for a few minutes to let the steam that has formed do its work. Bits of food that have stuck to the sides and top of the oven, grease, and spills will wipe right out, and the oven will have a clean, fresh smell.

If you spill RED wine on your carpet don't sweat it. Just pull out a bottle of WHITE wine and open it. Blot the spot with a towel wet with white wine and the spot will come up. This also works on clothes!

However, remember--it does not work in reverse. Red wine WILL NOT remove white wine.

When you wash your Plastic Shower Curtain in the clothes washer, throw in your plastic table clothes too. Then in the final rinse add
a cup of white vinegar. This will help keep your plastic pliable. They won't crack and split. Hang them up to dry.

I got this tip from a professional carpet cleaning guy! You can get colored stains (i.e., kool-aid, coke, etc) out of your carpet by putting amonia on them, laying a towel down over the spot/amonia and setting your iron on steam and going over it with the iron. The color lifts right out of the carpet and onto the towel!!

Shaving cream (not gel) will work on carpet stains too.

I have a great solution that I use to get out all types of stains, from blood to grass and food, out of fabrics and carpet. In a bucket, mix equal parts of bleach and granulated dishwashing detergent, add hot water, enough to cover the stained fabric. Let fabric soak for awhile then launder. If it's on the carpet use a sponge to apply and rinse later. This solution works great on colored fabric. It will not bleach it.

Does anyone have a way of getting the "stale" smell out of towels. No matter how hot I make the water or what softener I use, once they get damp, the musty smell is back.

Baking Soda. It covers a multitude of sins. (and can be used as a face scrub :-)

  • momma t

baking soda does not cover the sins... it neutralizes them chemically.......smells are acid ....it is a base....

um I think its utterly disgusting that someone would actually use shampoo to clean their toilets. In no way shape or form does that get rid of bacteria nor does it kill germs. I will stick to my lysol toilet bowl cleaner that actually disinfects and kills 99.999 percent of germs. Even though something may look clean on the surface; their could be millions of germs that you are just wiping over and not killing without the right cleaner.
