When I first spotted the playhouse of Erika Harbert's two young children, I was sure it was built for an adult. The patterns! The color! But then I remembered -- this is no ordinary mother. Harbert is the heart behind MikoDesign, a childrens' clothing and accessories company based overseas. She's also easily the most creative mother I've witnessed, recently throwing a Frida Kahlo party for her daughter's eighth birthday.
Yet my favorite project, by far, is Harbert's playhouse. Built from scratch with wood and colorful furnishings, the gorgeous playhouse is a far cry from the makeshift cardboard playhouse I had growing up. With cushions created from vintage scarves and patchwork curtains, textiles brighten up the sparse "home." The girls even have their own kitchen, made with plenty of storage for their many utensils. I particularly love the perforated "backsplash" (and you know I'm into perforation these days).
And wait -- is that a birdhouse I spot in the upper left corner? Such sophistication!
From bones to beauty, the girls seem to be enjoying their time in the playhouse immensely. What do you think? A step up from Jon and Kate's budget-breaking version? Would you try this in your own backyard?
