IKEA Bookcases, 5 Different Ways
Categories: Decorating, DIY: Done in a Day, Solutions, Projects, Design, etc
I think one of the best things about IKEA furniture is the opportunity for customization. The pieces are inexpensive, which gives you a few extra dollars to add an extra special touch. If you've ever walked through an IKEA, you've probably considered buying (or have already bought) a Billy bookcase. What's not to love? It's cheap ($89), comes in multiple colors and holds lots of books. But it can be a bit plain. So we decided to find some ways to spruce the shelves up. DIY-ers, check out these inspirational ideas to get your creative juices flowing:
I spotted Faith's fabric-lined Billy bookcases on Apartment Therapy. If you check out Faith's website, she offers a step-by-step slideshow on how she attached the fabric. Nifty!
There are a number of sites out there demonstrating the ease of attaching wallpaper to the back of your Billy. Julie of Rottencupcakes has a tutorial on her blog about attaching wallpaper to the back of your Billy bookcase (left). On the right, you can see how beautifully the wallpaper complements the white bookshelves with the traditional doors. This project was showcased on Design*Sponge along with full instructions. Have a look!
More experienced DIY-ers might like the next few ideas. First, Marie Claire Maison shows you that attaching colored plexiglass to your Billies can make them practically unrecognizable.
Ding3000's "Pimp My Billy" has resulted in a few cool ideas: one being this green Billy shelf (above), called Billy Wilder (get it?)
The Billy Heidenreich, also from Ding3000, is reminiscent of a lectern, where you can peruse heavy or large books right there without having to hold them -- perfect for that huge dictionary or over-sized atlas. Great for musicians too!
