Sexy hotels. Decadent dining rooms. Mid-century office spaces. AMC's Mad Men is one of the most captivating shows on television today – and it's not just due to its hedonistic plotlines or the suave advertising executive, Don Draper (actor Jon Hamm). For us, the smoke-filled scenes are just half the package. With period sets, bold costumes, and rich colors, Mad Men is so visually gorgeous, its pure seduction. And although it takes place in 1960s New York, it still lends us plenty of interior inspiration for today's spaces. So take a look (martini in hand) at the furnishings, the patterns, and the decor candy in some of our favorite spaces from new and past seasons–a few of these tricks might just add a little glamour to your modern space.
Mad Mens Seductive Spaces
Fresh from Season 3, the executive office of Bertram Cooper (co-owner of the fictional ad agency Sterling-Cooper) is one of the most delightfully mid-century-modern spaces featured on the show. In a warm palette of caramel and gold, it really wins us over with an intricately detailed Asiana screen in the background, and is the perfect place to sip a martini between meetings with clients...
This pale blue bed makes the bedroom in the Draper's upstate New York home as drama-packed as Don and Betty's marriage. With deep tufting, blue velvet, and a sensual curved shape, this piece is the epitome of lush luxury – and one we'd happily put in a bedroom today.
Alright, so the sofa might not hold up to today's standards (we don't even want to know what that fabric is), but talk about color inspiration! Burnt orange, blue gray and teal-that's fresh. The contrasting colors of the walls and carpet are pulled effortlessly together in the drapes. We think this palette is perfect to brighten up a smaller sitting space. Plus, if we had a hair color as bold as Joan's, we'd want a room to match, too.
Animal prints can be incredibly glamorous when done correctly, and here, the zebra-patterned wallpaper is the ideal finishing touch on this dining room. The way the pattern waves together is almost '60s psychedelic, but used as an accent with the elegant and understated ivory linens and chocolatey leather, it's wildly attractive.
Nearly 50 years later, and we still agree that the best way to give a bedroom a five-star look is with luxurious white linens. White on white stripes is all the pattern needed in this sexy space, and the neutral palette makes the fabulous copper and sage chair in the background truly pop.
So we're glad we've moved away from the foam-roller trend, but we wouldn't mind if modern salons had decor this chic. We'd gladly make this Rococo-inspired bench the focal point of a foyer.
Simple and functional, this elegant sectional sofa with room to hold six to eight is a piece we'd still use in a living room ... especially if it comes with Don Draper!
Though the office spaces of Mad Men are oh-so mid-century modern, the Drapers' home is much more traditional, and was built in the Colonial Revival style. Here, the oversized plaid wallpaper adds flair to the traditional country kitchen – paired with a cheery blue-green paint, it freshens the heavy pattern.
In this Manhattan hotel where Don meets one of his mistresses, soft lighting, a warm palette of cream, gold, and orange, the tufted velvet headboard, and dark wood accents make for an incredibly seductive space (the leopard print robe and bondage don't hurt, either).
We're looking forward to plenty more spectacular style and modern inspiration this season from Mad Men! Season 3 premieres this Sunday on AMC.

Mad Men is about 'when women knew their place".Woo Hoo. Take me back to those days of yester year.
ReplyIt's not advocating it, dummy. It's showing what it was like as a 2009 commentary on how unfair it was.
Dear Michele,
It just may be that you are in fact too dumb to watch this show. Don't take it personally, it's not meant for everybody. Just change the channel. I'm sure there must be an episode of Friends on somewhere @ 10pm on Sundays.
Do you really think this show would be the hit that it is if repressing women were the actual message? But no, YOU cracked the code, congratulations! Sheesh woman- THINK a little!
