The Knoll Saarinen, also known as the Tulip Collection, is arguably the most classic [thus, the most hacked] design from the 1950's. Created by Eero Saarinen, this circular, space-age-inspired table addressed the "ugly, confusing, unrestful world resulting from the slum of legs underneath typical chairs and tables."

The Saarinen was an instant hit and won various design awards, including the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award, throughout the following decade. Of course, with fame comes reproduction, and shortly thereafter a variety of "tulip" tables popped up on the scene. The more popular hack comes from iKEA -- the Docksta table -- and currently runs at just $149.

Whether you're a fan of the original or the various reproductions, the versatility of the piece can't be argued. Here we take a look at how the Knoll Saarinen transforms five different rooms...in five very different ways.

Our first room (above left) is an extreme-modern office space, anchored by a Saarinen table (and coordinating tulip chairs) to give the office a minimalist aesthetic. On the opposite end of the spectrum, however, is the photo on the right, which pictures a Saarinen used in a traditional country setting. The cherry wood accents and floral arrangements keep the space from appearing too stark and instead give a homey vibe that's perfect for an informal dining area.

This entryway is the perfect midcentury nook, allowing for symmetrical chairs and a bold light fixture to add texture. Here, the Saarinen blends in nicely with its surroundings, letting the floral arrangement and matching chairs act as a focal point for the eye.

This loft to the left has been given a traditional modern makeover with a contemoporary light fixture and the Saarinen table. Against the feminine wall color, the Saarinen's curves add to the delicate aesthetic and keep the room light and airy. To the right, the soft color palette and pastel textures of the room give the Saarinen a retro-glam appeal.

As you can see, the Saarinen may lack in originality, but it's certainly an investment piece that you can utilize in any space. Knoll would be so proud!
