The Goods
The Library of Congress, the research library of the United States Congress, has a treasure trove of archival images, and the LOC sells reproductions of many of their photographs and prints in an online shop. (They also have a brick-and-mortar retail location in Washington, D.C.)
The Secret
You can own a Walker Evans -- really! The Library of Congress's collection includes images by famous photographers like Evans, Dorthea Lange and Ansel Adams. The image at right is one taken by Walker Evans when he worked for the Farm Security Administration. However, you won't have to pay big bucks for the shot: 8 x 10 prints are a mere $28 unframed.
Things to Know
There's a lot here and while things are fairly well organized, it pays to have patience. However, The Library of Congress knows its shoppers may be looking for work from its more well-known names, so they have created a section of the site designated for "famous photographers." Don't let that stop you form exploring the rest of the site, you can find real gems like the two graphic prints at left and right below.
Reproductions of vintage posters are also available from the LOC. Photo: Library of Congress
