I've been spotting embroidery hoops everywhere lately, and I think the trend looks smashing. An inexpensive framing method that will add a dose of pattern to any room, embroidery hoops bid farewell to the outdated rectangular picture frames of years past (perhaps hoops are the new black?).

Try a few rows of embroidery hoops (also called swatch portraits) in a similar color family for this bold, monochromatic look. Or perhaps you'd like to accent your organized collections? Scatter a few hoops with a heavy dose of pattern to create a focal point that will draw your eye to the space (I love how Essie has done this!). You can even create a message board with the look.

Anxious to try the look on your own? The Purl Bee has the instructions, including a list of materials, a tutorial and a bit of loving inspiration for when you finish the project!

You can purchase embroidery hoops to create your own swatch portraits right here (I'd love a few of the white finishes myself!). And of course, you can't have a portrait without a swatch, can you? One of my favorite fabric stops is ReproDepot, and you're sure to find a variety of patterns that will fit the bill.

To decide which look is right for you, why not browse the swatch portrait flickr group right here? Enjoy, and be inspired!

This is definitely an easy way to show small pieces.

For me, it's funny because I do embroidery, but I only use a hoop when I'm working, not for the finished look.

But any which way is AOK!

My mom used to make these all the time. She used to use tea towels with crazy embroidery, though, and I like the mod-patterned fabric a lot better ;)
