When my husband and I moved into our apartment earlier this year, we didn't realize how much we'd actually spend on rugs. Having hardwood floors is a blessing and a curse: it's beautiful and luxurious, while at the same time easily dirty, loud and not very barefoot-friendly. We decided to get some area rugs to help cushion our tootsies, but as we were shopping we couldn't help but suffer from a little sticker shock. Rugs are expensive!

After that moment, I was on a mission. I wasn't going to pay $600 for an area rug no matter what. I'd weave my own rug if I had to (ok, well, maybe not really...)! I ended up with two 8' x 10' rugs from my local hardware store at about $150 each. I felt pretty good after that, and I think you'll feel pretty good about these bargains, too:

modern rugs

Modern rugs, even at a bargain, can come in many different shapes and sizes.

Modern
Modern doesn't mean boring! Go round with this Linden Street Large Floral (left) 3'x5' for $69, JCPenney, or you can be a little more bold and graphic plus customize your own size at just $13.95/tile with the FLOR Channel Surfing Tile at cb2 (right).

traditional rugs

Even at under $100 you can find rich-looking traditional rugs.

Traditional
Traditional rugs, to me, just look expensive. But theses aren't! The Home Floral Rug (left), $99, is from Target and the Black and Tan Wool Rug (right), $81, at Overstock will take any room up a notch. Tip: Place one of these with some more modern furnishings for an eclectic look.

southwestern rugs

Quick tip to add spice to any room? Add a southwestern style rug.

Southwestern
Southwestern, you ask? Yes, Southwestern. Why? Because they are fun, graphic and totally hip. Southwestern rugs will add that extra bit of flair that you're looking for. You could opt for a simple black and white graphic pattern with this Tribal Macrame Trim Rug (left), $58, at Urban Outfitters, or go extra-bold with the Elk Horn Area Rug (right), $89, at Home Decorators Collection. Either way, you're sure to make a statement underfoot.
