White House Renovations
One of the first steps of the White House renovations: new molding around the doors.
Rooms in the West Wing got a floor to ceiling makeover, with new carpeting and crown molding.
A worker in the West Wing. After the rooms were stripped and cleaned, they were painted. Ceilings are now light blue, baseboards are chocolate brown, crown moldings are white and the walls have been painted a light yellow. Politico got the scoop.
The classic crown molding needs an update.
This leafy patterned carpeting was installed five years ago during the Bush administration. It is being replaced.
The new carpeting, a beige striped pattern, was chosen with input from White House staffers.

Are you kidding me??? The country is in recession, jobs are almost non-existent to find and the White House is being painted with new moldings and new carpets? Who's paying for that??? Seeing the words "overdue renovations" regard the White House renovations is a joke - take a look at my house and I'll really tell you what "overdue renovations" looks like. Why doesn't the first family suck it up and live like the rest of us? I'm sure many of you will agree with me.
ReplyIn my state cupcake, unemployment is less than 9%. That means that over 91% are still working. Life does not end for the rest of us because you didn't get a good enough education to hold onto a job. You need to suck it up for your own stupidity. The White House represents us all. You can clearly see from the picture of the old carpet that it needed to be replaced. Contractors and carpet layers need the work. You should be glad that our tax dollars are being spent in this country. It sure beats the 3/4 of a BILLION dollar highway that your shrub built in Afghanistan and then, left unprotected, and is now a pile of rubble.
Well, the renovations did put several people to work. Everyone is screaming that our grandchildren will have to pay for all of this. I just hope my grandchildren will have a job to do so. If we don’t start insisting on American made goods, this country doesn’t stand a chance. I understand that protectionism is not the best answer, but it will stop the bleeding. We cannot exist as an entirely service based country. Your government cannot help you. YOU are holding the last dollar; don’t waste it. The job you save may be your own.
I agree all what u said that's all
Well said, Karen! I couldn't agree with you more!
Not only out of line for the economic times, but really ugly! Must have been Micheles doing because we all know she doesn't have any taste........look what she's married to! The White House is suppose to look regal, not like a Motel 6. And I paid for this ??????????
Once again, the Obama's can live their dream while on our dime. Vacation in Hawaii. Stop an event at the Met just so he can get there late. Vacation in Matha's Vineyard. Vacation in France (where the wife went shopping in boutiques) Replacing 5 year old carpeting? It's only money. It's only a recession. They are so out of touch with Americans. He demands that we make sacrifices to him and for him-Narcassistic. Selfish. 2013 can't come soon enough.
Karen, YOU are not the president of the United States and you don't have the responsiblity of the world on your shoulders...if the man wants new carpeting and some paint, he can have it....
Did any of you notice that this article appeared on the same day as one about the National Mall needing work to deal with weeds, dead grass, and re-ceding beachline threatening the Jefferson Memorial. Our national treasures, enjoyed by millions, are allowed to decay, but the President wastes money on frivolities - Typical of the man who has already shown he has no concern for our economy.
LOL, if only you can read. We pay taxes. A portion of those taxes go to public buildings for the renovation of those facilities. Now the White House may not be entirely public but it's definitely historic. The first family can "suck it up," but a key word I read was "workers". People need to work just like you or me--taking that you do work. I have a suggestion, instead of spending your free time critiquing an issue, why don't you send a letter to your local councilman requesting that these taxes be used to renovate your shack. P.S. -- It was only building doors that put these people to work, not an extension to George’s H. W. Bush’s basketball court. Oh, I believe during the other Bush’s term, he had the Press Room renovated as well as $1B sent to the UN for renovations during the war. How cost efficient?
Because they don't have to get over it and who cares how you live in your trailer house
The White House does not belong to the Obama's, it belongs to the USA, and is the place where all foreign visitors are taken as guests of this country. All Presidents have the opportunity to input their ideas on renovations, but the "needed" renovations would take place whether they did or not. As the article said, even the staff of the WH had input on some items. The Obama's are making far fewer requests than prior Presidents. Some made extensive changes, which did cost a lot of money, but the changes are intended to keep the White House in good condition and in a current style to represent this country well. People want to, wrongly, put blame on the President for EVERYTHING that takes place in this country. I would be more upset if they DIDN'T follow the long standing traditions of this nation.
So are you suggesting we should all stop purchasing carpets because the economy is bad? Won't that put carpet makers and installers out of business? And then there are companies that create and apply chemicals to make carpets stain resistant. You wish them shut down, too? How about companies that provide and apply dyes for design purposes and those who make the machinery to mass produce the products that go into carpet making? And then there are shipping companies, trains, trucks, and ships that transport the carpets. And don't forget retailers, too. How is shutting down all of these businesses going to help the economy? Please explain.
I think, maybe, we're better off trusting in President Obama and his economic advisers than you for attempting to get us out of this mess we inherited.
Get a life!!! ALL the presidents have added their touch-and a little paint and stuff is a heck of a lot cheaper that what ALL of the other Presidents have done..We ought to leave this man alone and have a bit more respect. He walked into a hornets nest when he took office
I have seen "Help Wanted" signs and new construction all over the country. I am putting a new roof on my house. Why don't you "suck it up" and go apply instead of just whining.
Karen, I understand exactly what you are saying and I am with you in most of it. We are in a recession and the President and First Family should be the ones to lead in adapting to this economy. Instead of so many trips, which I am totally against... since I do not recall any other President taking so many trips in the short time in office.... on one of those trips.... he even took a niece... where is all of the funding coming from? I am sure from us the tax payers. I understand that every time there is a new administration they have to rearrange things... its only normal... its the other things, the extra spending. This President instead of traveling abroad so much should be a little more concerned with the economy at home, take care of his own prior to taking care of others....
And I would like to say something else that I read on one of the other comments.... someone said.... that everyone likes to blame the President for everything... then I go back... and why is everyone blaming President Bush for everything else.... give me a break guys if you studied Government you should all be well aware that the President doesnt make decisions on his own... things have to be approved by several branches of government before ever becoming law.... or getting approved... so ease up on Pres. Bush and lets concentrate on what counts.... surviving this very long year.
I have also read of the assistants that our new First Lady has... a great deal of them... more than any other First Lady.... something like 22!!! Hillary had 3 and Laura had 1.... so why so many? Is he more important than the other First Ladies? Pres. Obama has spent more money in the short months he has been in office than Pres. Bush did in his administration... our deficit now is much bigger.... cash for klunkers.... give me a break, what happens to the small businesses that lived off those clunkers... the mechanics, the body shops.... and now what.... when all of those that bought a new car because of this so called incentive cannot pay for them... and the banks repocess.... is he bailing out the banks again? oh and because of that those on social security will not get the annual increase... does this make any sense?
And by the way... where is that state that hardly has any unemployment so I can move there cause here in Florida.... people cannot find jobs.... and we are qualified....
Karen's right. This BO family has an elitist attitude that just doesn't reflect what most Americans would like to see in their President. Expensive NE vacations and jaunts to NYC, pizza flown in to the WH from out of town, a (pardon the expression) "first lady" who "damns America" yet hires more than a dozen "servants" and "aides" to do her bidding, private tutoring and schooling for the daughters...the list goes on and on. Wake up, Americans...you're being played for fools by this dude and his ilk. Many of you have been sold a used car by an empty suit...and there's no motor under the hood!
I agree.... Are you kidding me? First, the condition of all the things you listed did not look like they needed any renovation or replacement. Secondly, since not a necessity, this was frivolous at a time when everyone else is conserving (you don't have any respect for tax dollars). Third, Yuk! You and your staff have horrible taste! Any designer or decorator without a "suck-up" device would tell you that is horrible. That carpet especially looks like "indoor/outdoor" basement quality carpet. You are defacing and disgracing the White house. You people (the first family) are a disgrace to the office of the President. When you're done with your term, if the country is still standing, the White House will definitely need a face lift. You (Obama & Michelle) have Zero taste.
No, I disagree with you and I think you're just jealous of the first
family.
You bitter old woman.
I agree with Karen. At my kids Highs school there are up to 50 kids in every class. My daughter, who is in middle school, will not have any sports whatsoever this year. Music, PE and the Liabrarian have been cut at the Elementary school they attended. There are children in the United States who are starving when they go to bed at night. And, yes, though my husband is a System Analyst and makes good money, our home definitely needs work that we cannot afford. So, I think maybe the White house could wait a year or two until the economy has stablized. There are hardworking people who are out of work.
