A Fabric Headboard -- Cheap and Stylish

Who needs actual furniture? Photo: Jacques Dirand, Insider's Paris: An Intimate Guide by Jean Demarchy and Francois Baudot
Interior designer Frédéric Méchiche -- a total rock star in the design world (I think so, anyway) -- is one of the most sought-after decorators in Paris. And apparently, he isn't afraid of bending the rules when it comes to furniture.
Instead of a stodgy old bed, Méchiche created a headboard using a swagged fabric hung high above the mattress. The wide black-and-white fabric, also used on the bedskirt, creates a graphic effect in the room.
I daresay this isn't a difficult look to copy -- Could a fancy decorator be doing a bit of DIY?

The perfect solution for a space-hungry kitchen? No, you don't need to go to the trouble (and major cost) of installing cabinets -- just cover it up with a swath of fabric.
This is a genius little trick that will hide all your unmentionables and will work in a bathroom with a pedestal sink, too. In a nook like this, all you need is tension rod and a few yards of fabric.
Inspired? Here's a few other spaces that could use the fabric treatment: In a closet, replace doors with fabric panels. You can add color and some texture, too. In warmer weather climates, a lightweight linen or sheer could stand in for screen doors.
