I try to use environmentally friendly household cleaning products whenever I can, and over the years I have gathered together an arsenal of cleansers that get my apartment clean without harming the environment. I also buy recycled paper towels and try to use a cloth dishtowel whenever possible. So, it's funny that I never stopped to think about the tools I use to clean. What about my sponges and scrubbers? I decided to investigate what green cleaning tools were available today.
Cute as a button and good for the earth, we love Twist's line of green cleaning tools Photo: Twist
Twist, a company that launched in 2007, is leading the pack with a whole line of sponges, scrubbers and cloths. The products are made from biodegradable materials, and as an added bonus, these products are all great-looking in addition to being earth-friendly. I also love that
Twist's packaging can be recycled into bird feeders -- How neat is that?
The packaging is nothing to write home about, but the products inside are hard-working and durable. Photo: Pacific Dry Goods
Pacific Dry Goods manufacturers an
EcoSponge and an
EcoTowel that are staples on green living e-commerce sites. The sponges and towels are billed as made from a durable and washable natural fabric.

I also discovered that my mother has been using an environmentally-sound sponge for years. The
Pop-Up Sponges from Williams-Sonoma are made from all-natural materials. I can say from experience that you can easily wash these sponges in the dishwasher to make them last even longer, which is the key to cutting back on waste in the first place.
