purple living roomRich, luxurious purple is the "it" color this fall -- Are you gonna be in style? Photo: Ideal Home

Purple is the new it color. Don't take it from me -- all you need to do is flip through a recent home magazine or read a decorating blog. Purple is everywhere. In fact, it was highlighted in both September issues of House Beautiful and Elle Decor. And, I just read about purple on Apartment Therapy.

Purple, or amethyst, is a jewel tone, hanging out alongside rich topaz, vibrant teals, and emerald green (called jewel tones because, as you can see, they're usually named after precious stones). I often hear about purple being one of the least liked colors in the rainbow, but it's time to look at it in a different light. Let's take a closer look at some beautiful rooms and products where amethyst is the focal color and analyze why it works.

Check out some more purple places and let us help keep you in style with our roundup of affordable purple items.

You might think that purple is always the focal color in a room because of its dramatic color, but purple meets its match with turquoise and often plays second fiddle. Adding a splash of turquoise can actually soften the dramatic effect of a vibrant purple.

Remember that although purple looks rich and expensive, it doesn't have to be. Try adding some of these items to your home to get that luxurious look while still being able to afford all those holiday presents on your mind...

Purple is my favorite color, but I wouldn't use it as a main room color - only for accents - like the pillows shown above. It really is a clothing color, not a decor color. I believe this is just another fad and will die out soon, so don't put a lot of work into painting your walls with a purple. Neutrals are best, with added "pop" colors to spark it up - that way, you can change a room's look quickly and without a lot of expense just by swapping out pillows, drapes, furniture throws, and accessories like vases and flowers, hanging prints, and knickknacks.

We've come to the bottom of the barrel if purple is the new "it" wall color. Yuck. Time to look up, not look desperate for a change, any change.

Lissa...Purple is a royal, regal color...to each their own...if U don't dig it, that's cool...but upon having nothing good to say then better to say nothing...

    Peace!

I think voice an opinion good or bad is IMPORTANT... and I'm chiming in on the bad side... purple WAS regal but at the turn of the century PINK was the color you dresses BOYS in.... Times change and purple getting pushed is just a way for manufacturers to get rid of old stock and fabrics in a recession.. like they did with dress fabric last season.... giant stinker

Um Aladdin, she didn't insult your mother. She doesn't want her living room purple. Can You blame her? It's horrendous.

I agree with Lissa. Purple the new 'IT' color??? ICKKKK!! I quess I'll be outa style then. Of course, I'm not one to conform to what others say is in or out of style. I decorate according to my tastes...not someone elses. Besides, purple (unless it's very pale purple) is much to dark...dreary looking which makes a room look smaller. I prefer light...happy colors. Regal or not, they've definately hit an all time low with this one.

This will be a very short-lived trend, if trend it is. The color of a bad mood...the color of bruises. Yuk.

FINALLY - good taste finally prevails! If I see another red or beige wall - so overdone, and enough with the seafoam green, too. I always use purple or shades thereof, and they look great in any room. There are so many shades, too. It is the highest color and can be light or dark or inbetween. It mixes with almost anything and can be a total look or an accent. Use some "creativity" and open your minds!!
