I read a fascinating article in The New York Times about creating an oasis of calm in your home. "We're all navigating far more stress than usual, especially in this last year," said Robert D. Henry, a New York-based architect quoted in the article. "So bringing back a sense of balance is more important than ever."

We couldn't agree more. And while Henry suggests infusing your home with lavender scents and water/fire elements to soothe the soul, I'd like to take it one step further. Consider this your all-inclusive guide to de-stressing your home...and keeping it that way.

1. Get organized
According to Feng Shui principles, clutter drains you of your positive energy. And although I don't know much about Feng Shui personally, I can attest to the truth of clutter-related stress. I'd suggest keeping a household organizer to keep important paperwork and household materials at bay. Everything else? Research ways to maximize your space (we've got some great tips in the bedroom and at the office!). Most importantly, be sure you have ample amounts of storage available to keep things tidy. The more surface area (tables, floors, countertops) you have uncovered, the better.

2. Get neutral
Neutral decor works in any room, and the look creates a natural balance between the interior's objects. The look works best when paired with plenty of natural lighting to avoid a beige/boring aesthetic.

3. Lighten up
If your kitchen is red, listen up. Color is notorious for changing your mood quickly, and a surefire way for "combatting the calm" is to surround yourself with bright, stimulating tones. Use plenty of soft, tranquil hues both in your paint colors and your decor itself. For a list of colors and their corresponding emotions, Global Healing Center has a great read.

4. Plant it
Whether or not you have a green thumb, plants are a simple way to incorporate nature into your home, thus, creating a soothing atmosphere. Start with a few easy-to-manage household plants, such as a small cactus or bonsai tree. And OK, if you're totally against anything living inside of your home, fake it with green, floral elements, as pictured.
