Paper Halloween ornaments

Crafted from seasonal craft paper, these ornaments look harder to make than they actually are. Photo: Laura Fenton

When daydreaming about Halloween décor, I found myself thinking about Christmas ideas that could be adapted for the spooky season. A geodesic dome ornament is a classic Christmas craft that is easily used for fall decorating, simply make it out of Halloween or autumnal scrapbook paper instead of a holiday-themed pattern.

To make a paper dome, cut out 20 circles of paper, fold them and then glue them together. Martha Stewart Living has some good directions for how to make a paper dome on her site, while this artist has a good rendering of what the dome looks like as its being assembled. I used a water glass as my template for the circles and cut them out of scrapbook paper. I found that it was easier to apply the glue neatly with a paintbrush, than by hand so I poured some good old-fashioned Elmer's glue into a bowl and dipped a brush in it.

To finish these balls I used a thin piece of grosgrain ribbon and knotted it three times so that a large knot formed. I then positioned the knot inside of the dome before gluing it all together, so that the long strands hang out the top. See this diagram for positioning.

Hang these pretty paper ornaments in front of a window, from the corner of a bookcase, from a hook -- or just about anywhere you please!
