The newest innovation from appliance visionary James Dyson is the Dyson Air Multiplier™ Fan, which I think looks like something out of the Jetsons -- or maybe just a big magnifying glass. Anyway, I was lucky to get one of these 10" bladeless fans in the mail this week and test it out. And, I just have to say, wow! This is one nice-looking fan.

Not only does it blow air as well as my Hunter tabletop fan, but since it has no grill and no blades, it is super lightweight and easy to clean. I hate cleaning my fans, probably more than making the bed or doing the dishes, so having this fan around will save me some grief, that's for sure. The flow of air flying out of this fan is like a lovely breeze, but you can change it to more of a gusty wind with the turn of a simple knob. It also has an oscillating function, where the base moves at the touch of your hand. My favorite part about it though, is that it's quiet (well, and maybe the cleaning thing).

The fan works by drawing air into the base and forcing it upwards into the loop amplifier. The air is accelerated through the 1.3mm annular aperture, creating a jet of air that hugs the airfoil-shaped ramp. Then, as it exits the loop amplifier, the jet pulls air from behind the fan into the airflow. At the same time, the surrounding air from the front and sides of the machine are forced into the air stream, amplifying it 15 times. Here's a diagram that might help illustrate this, because I'm no rocket scientist and I love pictures:

This fan won't dry your wet rugs or save you any money (10" model is $299 and the 12" model is $329), but it will cool you in the summertime and circulate the air around your room quietly. Plus, it just looks (and feels) cool.
