Boring fireplace? Pattern it! Photo: Domino Mag
I despise a perfectly functional fireplace that has been ignored. You know the kind -- the over-sized mantle hosts a few family portraits and a seasonal wreath or two, but that's it.
I recently asked a friend why she doesn't dress up her fireplace and she replied "Because it's already beautiful!" WRONG! Wrong, wrong, wrong. Tell me, ladies -- would you refuse moisturizer in the evening because you're already beautiful? Never! You wouldn't ignore your skin, so don't ignore your fireplace. It's the focal point of any room, and it's much more high maintenance than you'd think. Here's how to beautify your fireplace!
1. Go Asymetrical
Toss your previous design knowledge out the window because when it comes to fireplaces anything goes. Because many fireplaces have a very symmetrical shape, dress your mantle up with a few unexpected sizes and shapes.
2. Layer
As in fashion, layers can make or break an ensemble. Play with layers by resting a mirror or large-scale painting on the mantle itself, rather than hanging it. From there, simply place a few of your favorite objects (vases, candlesticks, glassware, etc) around the large piece. You'll create depth and drama without even realizing it!

3. Add Patterns
Perhaps your fireplace is out of commission, or you just don't ever use it. Dress it up with wallpaper, contact paper or your favorite fabric. There are many tutorials to do so, and the look couldn't be more beautiful.
4. Don't Forget the Details
Why not replace your logs with a collection of soft, warm candles to create a lovely ambiance for the space. Or, for a more funky look, spray-paint the logs in a bright, contrasting hue for a bold result.
5. Pretend
Don't have a fireplace? Fake it! Secure a large mantle in any part of your room and create a fireplace element without the heavy installation costs.
Whatever you decide, be sure to bring that fireplace back to life. After all, focal points need love as much as the next architectural element (if not more so!).
