bench and table makeover

The final fruits of my labor: A like-new table and bench set. Photo: Laura Fenton

The last time I talked about my table and bench set makeover, I told you that I was thinking about swapping out the fabric. I had gone to B&J Fabrics, one of my favorite fabric shops in New York, and cut swatches for possible patterns. I posted them online for you to vote on. I laid them out, thought about them, pinned them up on my bulletin board and didn't make up my mind. This is typical Laura, by the way.

As with any good DIY project, I was thrown a loop on this makeover. I was at IKEA picking up fabric for a project when I came across just what I had been looking for: A stripe with a bit of personality in a somewhat muted palette. Best of all, it only cost $7.99 a yard, which was so cheap that I just went ahead and bought it. (All the B&J options had started at $18 a yard!)

When I got the fabric home, I removed the old vinyl and fabric from the top or the table and the benches. This time I decided I'd only use the vinyl layer over the table and leave the seats as bare fabric, since I couldn't remember ever having wiped a spill off of one of the benches.

The end result matches the other furnishings with which I hoped to pair the benches and tables. I also like the stripe because it's a versatile choice that should be a good match for my tastes for years to come. What do you think, is the final makeover a success?
