I have a decorating weakness: curb appeal. Here's the thing--I can decorate the inside of my home in my sleep. I know about staging, furniture arrangements and textures. But when it comes to the outside of my home, I'm at a total loss. It just seems so much more difficult than it really is. In fact, updating your home's curb appeal takes only five simple steps, and it can increase your home's overall value as well as earn you some more potluck invitations from the neighbors.

1. Number it.
House numbers are one of the easiest transformations to a front exterior and probably the cheapest way to upgrade your curb appeal. First of all, yes, you need house numbers. And they'd better not just be on your mailbox (are you reading this, Mom?!). For a modern look, try some funky typography or a sleek stainless font.

2. Paint it.
Your front door, that is. A bright, bold front door will make your home appear cheery and welcoming, and may even inspire you to take good care of those entryway details!

3. Plant it.
Pay attention to landscaping, and consider hiring a professional to decide arrangements, colors and types. Plants are an easy way to brighten up any space, but they must be placed strategically to avoid looking kitschy.

4. Hang it.
Every door needs a bit of bling, so consider a wreath, door knocker or a well-placed sculpture next to the door. After all, first impressions are the best impressions!

5. Place it.
Place a welcoming door mat on your front step to greet guests with style. Avoid hard-to-clean textures and colors, and be sure to replace and/or clean them often. A dirty welcome mat defeats the entire welcoming process!

Incorporate a few of these ideas to up your curb appeal and your front door will be the best door on the block!
