My mission? Take $1,500 and give their 800-square-foot space a modern update that both sexes would love -- all before she returned home three days later. Take a look at what I accomplished and let me know what you think!
The living room got a much-needed face-lift. Photo: Allison Lind
The bulk of the budget went to the living room -- the most commonly used space in the home. The biggest drama comes from a horizontal paint line of sunshine yellow wrapping three out of four walls. A horizontal line helps bring the eye down and creates a cozier feel for this super-lofted space. Affordable furnishings and accents update the space, while a few "investment" pieces (the brown and cream Zigzag rug from West Elm, and dramatic arc lamp and Spoke Mirrors from CB2) bring the look to the next level, and the rug helps hide the scuffed-up drab floor. [Other sources: The coffee table, TV unit, drapery and throw pillows are from Ikea; the wall blocks are from Target.]
Entryway

Nothing about this entry said "welcome home." This first impression for guests needed to make a more exciting statement. Now the sunshine yellow (continued in the living room) on one wall turns the entry into an introduction of the rest of the apartment, while another wall in a graphic trellis wallpaper shows guests that these homeowners have some personality.
Living Room Nook

Patricia and Brendan weren't making use of this well-lit corner with a pretty view to a cathedral across the street. Even the shelf filling the space didn't serve a useful storage purpose, holding only frames and knickknacks. Now a once unused spot becomes a reading nook, relaxation spot and extra seating for guests. The shapely rocking chair (from Ikea) also serves a visual purpose of breaking up the monotony of the rectangular sectional. The pretty three-dimensional rose pillow (from Blissliving Home) adds a soft touch to the modern room.

This is a great makeover! Do you mind sharing resources? I LOVE the zig zag rug!
ReplyLook in a magazine and get ideas from them, this make over is a mess would not want your house to look like a total mismatch.
Are you serious??? They not only lost 1500 bucks but also one hell of a lot of work they did! Sorry but if that was me and I came home to THAT, I'd be pissed BAD! Sure, what they had could use some work but My God, now they really need to shell out some money to fix this mess that's been created.
This is a nightmare, the poor people! And they probably said they liked it to the designer because they didn't want to hurt his feelings. This is horrible, living inside a lemon! It makes the small space look even smaller!
they need to hit the undo button.
Every room looks worse than it did in the before picutures. If someone did that to my house i would hit them with a spiked bat.
If I was Brendan's GF, I'd be steamed when i got home to find out how trashy my apt looked. Instead of "taking it up a notch" now it looks like an art student's first apartment. What a shame!
ReplyI would have opted for addiitions such as a warm blue solid color drapery to all fullness to the window, perhaps in a raw silk to glam it up, periwinkle blue comes to mind...along with pillows for the sofa in the same fabric and an area rug to cement the area in a neutral tone, so as not to serve as a distraction. A wall mirror above the sofa would add light and depth and I"d get rid of the entertainment center and mount the TV on the wall. Use the existing etegere as an entertainment console...this frees up the space by the window and I'd use it as a bar ...just some nice goblets on a chrome and glass tray and the usual bar stuff kept to a minumum. A nice chair with a small table and a lamp to scale for reading would fit comfortably in that area now that the etagere has beem moved to the other side of the TV. It is such a small place that one could put two small glass side tables as a cocktail table...they would make the room look bigger...glass and mirrors trick the eye.....just constructive criticism....it was terribly sweet of her to attempt a makeover. Pardon my typos, they seem to follow wherever I type...lol
Do not like! Way to busy! I agree this looks like a couple of GF's 1st apt!! Don't mind the zz rug, but the browns, and blues, and yellows and black and white 20 different colors in one room... do you give refunds?
ReplyI think the bedroom was the only actual improvement ,, there are too many things that dont reach the same level... it can be called eclectic but even that is a miss with the under items to be displayed ,,nice attempt
ReplyThe living room is scary..... too much "stuff" in such a small space. The others aren't so bad. I would NOT be happy with it.
ReplyThis is what I call Yuk at its highest form
ReplyCan you say some one was on something
I would be so ticked to come home and find this and I am a Guy
I liked the split yellow/white wall paint in the living room.
ReplyI had the store mix a nice blue paint for my boys room, but have been waiting for some reason not to paint. I will now paint the room blue/white like you did their living room. Thanks for the inspiration and great job. The previous tenants had painted the walls brown, and it's so depressing.
I like it...except for that painted on headboard - it looks like it was painted on by a middle schooler. Couldn't you have done better than that?
Replytacky -
ReplyLiving room walls AWFUL, the rest of the place is just plain poor taste except tor bedroom. Waste of $1500.
ReplyThe person who designed this needs to go back to design school. This looks like it was designed by the Salvation Army. I don't care how little it cost; it is a disaster.
ReplyI think YOU should have left for 3 days, not the GF.
ReplyI liked most of the changes, but the yellow shade was just too jarring. Too bright and too high a contrast for the colour scheme. Liked the hallway. Liked the bedroom but thought a real headboard, covered in a soft fabric in the same colour scheme as the wall. (Fabric and staples can be purchased reasonably would have been a better upgrade then just a painted outline). Liked the use of the corner in the living room for the new chair. Would have used more of a auburn brick colour in the living room for a contrast with a cream as the lighter colour. It would have tied in better with the hallway trellis paper and the browns in the living room furniture and bedroom.
ReplyThe split-painting in the living room is terrific (and I don't even like yellow!) The split painting concept and the living room nook are WONDERFUL touches...but then the atmosphere is ruined (goes from cozy to frenetic) by that awful, loud black&white zigzag carpet (ugh!) A smaller (not loud & ugly) carpet would be ok - but don't hide those lovely wood floors!
ReplyI despise the gray paint in the bedroom ("mushroom gray" even sounds bad). The peach was a bright, cheerful color which I much preferred. Painting a headboard is a clever idea...but if it were my room, I'd paint over those sickly gray walls immediately!
