I couldn't resist these dismembered digits as fun food for Halloween. I made them with my nieces and nephews this past weekend, and they loved mixing the red dough and shaping the fingers. They even ate the end result -- although my one niece made me eat the nail off before she'd take a bite. Too bad they weren't vegetables...but I'll work on that next.

Yes, I cheated. I opened a tube of Pillsbury Breadsticks instead of making my own dough. Here's how to make these creepy fingers:

1. After tearing at the perforations, cut each in piece in half. Reserve two halves and put in a disposable cup. Add red food coloring and use a fork or spoon to thoroughly spread food coloring throughout the dough.

2. Of the remaining dough, mold each into a slender shape -- like a finger. Push down at one end. Using a plastic bag or a glove, mold a tiny piece of red dough into a nail shape and place in the depression at the tip for a nail. Then, use a fork to make knuckle markings.

3. Bake according to
manufacturer's directions. Display them at the table sticking out of a glass filled with red sugar. Yum!
