Apparently, Michelle Obama inspired the master gardeners at Burpee, who decided her garden should be visited by all. George Ball, chairman of Burpee and proprietor of Fordhook Farm, sowed the seeds of the copycat garden. He says that they were careful to recreate it as closely to the White House version as possible. "The White House Garden has done a great job of showcasing the advantages of growing your own vegetables," he says. "In creating our Fordhook version of the garden, we utilized the diagram they provided and created an exact replica. We chose to make some alterations in what we planted in view of soil conditions and typical weather conditions experienced over a long period of time."
The Burpee Garden at Fordhook Farm will be open to the public for the first time on Friday, Oct. 30th, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and lectures and guided tours will be available.

White House Garden Replica

At Fordhook Farms in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, you can visit a replica of the White House veggie garden. Here's a picture of the plot. Marigolds are planted next to red cabbage -- both are crops that have a higher tolerance for the cooler temperatures of spring and fall.
The replica garden is approximately 1300-square-feet, a little larger than the White House Kitchen Garden. A high angle of the garden shows that the White House garden is planted in squares so people can walk in between planted areas. It makes it easier to care for the garden without compacting or disturbing the garden soil.

Even in October, these marigolds were bright next to leafy lettuces in the replica of the White House veggie garden. Behind the lettuces is colorful, leafy swiss chard.
Cabbage is a classic cool weather vegetable and this red cabbage is no exception. The White House Kitchen Garden as well as the copycat garden include four squares of cabbage in the 22 squares planted.
Red cabbage is often used in coleslaw and side dished. When it is cooked, red cabbage will normally turn blue but if you want to retain the red hue, you should add vinegar or acidic fruit to the pot.
