Benefits and Care
Solid surface countertops are durable, stain and chemical resistant, and available in consistent patterns, so you know what you're getting from a small swatch. However, they are not heat resistant, so homeowners are encouraged to use a trivet when putting down hot pots. In addition, cutting boards are recommended to avoid potential scratching from knives. However, some scratches can be sanded out. One of the greatest benefits of these surfaces is that they also usually come with a warranty, much like engineered stone.
Sealing and Cleaning
Solid surface countertops do not need to be sealed and cleaning them is a snap. Just use soapy water or ammonia-based cleaners. You can also use special solid surface cleaners. However, it is not recommended to use window/glass cleaners as they can leave a waxy buildup.
How Does It Measure Up?
Although you can't really DIY these countertops as you can with soapstone or concrete, they cost less than granite or marble. They certainly beat out marble and granite in the area of staining, and are just as durable. However, since they' haven't been around that long, it is a little early to say how long they will really last.
