A modern take on the classic Chesterfield sofa. Photo: Flickr user: ooh_food

We're big fans of the Chesterfield here at ShelterPop (and we're not talking the inflatable kind!). Evoking class, coziness and a touch of glamour, the Chesterfield has long been a staple in the traditional design scene. Yet did you know where the Chesterfield originated? Neither did we, until we stumbled upon a bit of research regarding the Chesterfield's history:

"This icon of the furniture world is widely thought to have been commissioned by, and consequently named in honor of, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Dormer Stanhope, in the 18th century. Aside from being a much-admired politician and writer, the suave Earl was a known trendsetter. When the Earl requested a cabinetmaker to construct a piece of furniture that would allow a gentleman to sit upright in the utmost of comfort, thus was the inception of the Chesterfield sofa with its characteristic deep buttoned upholstery, rolled arms, equal back and arm height and nail head trim. There has never been any solid confirmation of this noble beginning. However, this namesake is certainly appropriate. Stanhope was a noted writer of letters to his illegitimate son, extolling all method of manners and morals. The Chesterfield sofa is certainly a refined and mannerly example of seating."

Interesting, right? Consider yourself a noble Earl next time you lounge on the historical Chesterfield...

Just remember that an original chesterfield sofa is constructed from a full hide (not 'demic' which is a patchwork construction with the joins hidden in the pleats of the chesterfields tufting. in addition check for the use of real polished nails in the construction which should be visible on the exterior - these are often faked with a strip of nailheads being hammered on the exterior.

Another thing to loo for is that the pleats are 1/2 to 1 inch deep as lesser dimensions may cause the pleats to pop resulting in an unsightly bulge

Finally, the original chesterfield soes not have a cushioned base, you sit on the frame directly which is stuffed and sprung for comfort.
