Former San Francisco 49er and football legend Joe Montana put his Sonoma house on the market, according to The Wall Street Journal. The price? $49 million. You might think that's a lot, but you can't put a price on a labor of love.
Montana and his wife, Jennifer, were so drawn to the Italian lifestyle that they spent the last decade recreating a 9,700-square-foot Tuscan-style villa on 500 acres in Calistoga, California. Surrounded by mountains, hills and forest, the home is extremely private with expansive, breathtaking views. It features imported European details, horse stables with an indoor arena and a separate gym building. The enormous kitchen includes a green marble slab brought from Italy.
The former football great's love of food and wine is another reason that the couple was drawn to Italy. In fact, he almost purchased a local winery. However, his wife says that ultimately Joe "needed a beer tap, a pretty good-sized television screen and a barbecue area," which somehow ended up turning into a compound that included a white-sand beach with a 45-foot-deep bass pond, basketball court and horse trails.
Another personal feature in the home is the Montana crest, painted over the fireplace in the loggia (who has a loggia!?). The crest was painted by an artist from the South of France. If you're a Montana, then this home might be calling your name!
The Montanas are relocating to Thousand Oaks, California -- 400 miles south of Calistoga -- to be closer to their kids. (Their two sons are football players.) It's a shame they can't take this property with them.

THERE IS NOT A HOUSE IN THE WORLD WORTH 49M.........WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?
ReplyYou are forgetting this is California where the prices are out of site.
If built in a midwestern state etc would probably 1/3 of the price as it is in CA.
Phil, it's more than just a house. 9,700 square feet has to be 4 - 5 times the size of your average house. On top of that is what is built into the structure. That plus it's on 500 acres of land. Read the whole article. Details of what the spread includes jumps the value up quite a bit. Of course, if I had $49 million, I'd stay here and buy my entire neighborhood instead of buying Joe's villa.
Greed !
I totally agree, Phil
I agree 100%. I wouldn't care if I worth billions, I could never spend more then $300k for a house and while I really love the outdoors and cars, I could never spend more then a million for land or $50k for a car. Like I said even if I was worth billions. I'm petty content in my clean little two bedroom house with one kid driving my paid off 4x4 p/u and making only $40k annual. Yea, there are days when I wish I made more around $60k so I could be more secure, but I don't ever really wish to live like these celeb and sports people. Heck, if I was that rich I'd have everybody and there mother trying to pretend to be my friends and I could never relax. Just my thoughts.
OMG IF ONLY I HAD THEMONEY TO BUY IT! OF COURSE IF I COULD BUY IT , I WOULDN'T HAVE TO WORK A DAY AGAIN IN MY LIFE. WHAT A DREAM LIVING THERE WOULD BE. AND ALL THE ACRES OMG THIS WOULD BE HEAVEN ON EARTH.
ReplyIF ONLY , IF ONLY......HEY JOE, WHY DON'T YOU JUST GIVE IT TO ME, A HARD WORKING GAL FROM THE MIDWEST? YOU CAN AFFORD IT AND IT WOULD MAKE ME AND MY HUBBY IMMENSELY HAPPY........
It would make a hell of a church!
ReplyHell, it LOOKS like a church -- sheesh, what an ego someone would have to have to build something like that to live in.
what is your website?
ReplyTaxes and all they should have bought in Italy. With the difference their children could have flown private jet.
ReplyJoe you were a hell od a great ballplayer and highly underestimated.
THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS PRICE I HAVE EVER HEARD FOR A HOUSE IN MY LIFE! PACK ON THE PROPERTY/SCHOOL TAXES, MAINTENANCE, AND PREPARE FOR THE END OF THE WORLD AS YOUKMNOW IT. I THINK THIS NONSENSICAL PRICING AND SPENDING COMES WHEN YOU STILL NEED TO PRVE SOMETHING AND YOU NO LONGER LOVE, WANT OR NEED YOUR WIFE OR SPOUSE. REALITY BECOMES BLURRY AND THE FUTURE LOOKS BLEAK. AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT I THINK. IT'S LIKE SCREAMING "I AM STILL HERE ." LOOK.
ReplyJoe I was a FAN when you played at ND. You can give Tiger some help in better way's of living and spending his money. (GRIN)
ReplyI'll take it off your hands for 100 bucks, Joe. What an ugly house!
ReplyHappiness is knowing when you have enough!. Slow down and enjoy yourself, Joe!
ReplyI hear that Lenny Dykstra is looking for a new home. Perhaps Joe can give Nails a call.
ReplyCalistoga's in Napa not Sonoma, isn't it?????????????????
ReplyIt's to bad the kids couldn't find a position on one of the bay area high school teams. I guess you have to get them on a team somewhere ;-)
ReplyJOE, I'M PROUD OF YOU, A GREAT 49ER, A GREAT HOME AND HAPPYNESS. ENJOY AND WE WILL DREAM ON.
