Welcome to my newest dream home in Portland, Maine. Photo: Sotheby's Realty
I can't talk about how much I love
this property without grabbing my carry-on bag from the attic and booking a one-way flight to Portland, Maine. (Alas, I have to!) The character of this house is so similar to what I'd want in my future dream home, but of course, a flat roof doesn't quite cut it among the notorious weather of Indiana.
Goodbye, paisley! Hello, chevron! Photo: Sotheby's Realty
I suppose I'll have to decorate vicariously, as usual. This time I'd like to tackle the living room, because face it -- this sunny yellow paint color and paisley overstuffed couches are simply not doing it for me. I mean, look at this house! The view! The design! It needs a young, hip vibe, and covering up the awesome with paisley is what I believe to be a cardinal sin. Don't worry. I'll be turning this boring living room into a hot spot faster than I can say "American Airlines for one, please."
I spotted this gorgeous
Emilia Ceramics zig-zag lamp and immediately knew it would act as inspiration for the space. I'd switch out the yellow paint for a dark charcoal shade on one wall, accented with a lighter gray. The room gets plenty of light, so I'd go for as much drama in the space as possible. On the floor, this
Anthropologie rug would look stellar in contrast with the masculine lines of the lamp, and I'd add these
blue gauzy curtains for a pop of color.
In place of that stuffy couch, I'd choose a
sleek sofa from Jayson Home & Garden, adding a
console between the couch and wall. Of course, surface area is a necessity, but I'd forego the boxy coffee table for a pair of
golden log stools to pump up the glam factor and contrast with the formal sofa.
Looking better already, right? Lastly, I'd include some additional seating by throwing in a few
Nelson Coconut chairs to spice up the angles in the room. And with that the room is no longer drab!

Pretty cool house. Love the flat roof! But, yes, it's difficult to maintain--no matter where you live!
