Side-by-Side Refrigerator

The side-by-side refrigerator is characterized by two doors that run the length of the appliance. The left side is the freezer and the right side houses the refrigerated area. Almost all side-by-side fridges offer in-door ice and water dispensers. For many consumers, this is a major plus to this configuration, but appliance experts say this is also the area of the refrigerator that is most likely to have problems. With side-by-side refrigerators, you place most of your shelved items at eye-level with drawers at the bottom.

Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator

Another refrigerator configuration features the refrigerated area on the top and the freezer area on the bottom. The fridge isn't divided at all lengthwise, like in the side-by-side, but rather, the refrigerated area sits on top of the freezer. The bottom freezer drawer is usually a pull-out, and can offer more storage space for people who like to freeze meats and other generally flat, uniformly sized items. The setup also means the refrigerated items are all at eye-level and you don't have to bend to get to them. These types of fridges will not have ice or water in the door, because the freezer area is too low.

French Door Refrigerator
French door refrigerators are sort of a mix between the side-by-side and the bottom-freezer models. The top area has two doors, like the side-by-side, but they both open to the refrigerated section. The bottom usually has a pull-out drawer for a freezer, like bottom-freezer models. French door refrigerators also don't have in-door ice. While popular because of their sleek look, the French door refrigerator actually offers slightly less refrigerated space because of its unique configuration.

Top-Freezer Refrigerator
The top-freezer refrigerator may not be the most trendy or sleekest looking system out there, but experts say it is one of the most energy-efficient and is definitely one of the least-expensive choices you can make. They're also good for smaller spaces. While you do have to bend down to get into the refrigerated area while the freezer is at eye-level, the top-freezer model can be an excellent choice for anyone with tight spaces or a tight budget.
