Would You Live in a Knitted House?

A knitted yurt? Yes, indeed! Photos: The Daily Green

Kate Pokorny would. In fact, the ambitious crafter is embarking on a mission to create an entire house (more accurately, wooly igloo) out of crocheted materials. Inspired by fellow knitter Margaret Wertheim's recent TED discussion on crocheting the coral reef, Pokorny set out to complete a lofty goal: the creation of a 100 percent self-supporting, hand-felted yurt (portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed dwelling structure).

Why a yurt? According to the Daily Green, Mongolian nomads made felt for their homes "via a labor intensive process that still required an internal structure at the end of the day." Labor intensive, indeed, as Pokorny prepares for a long season of achy fingers.

Want to help? Because Pokorny is sourcing all materials locally from New Hampshire, her bill is quite costly. She's raised over $2,200 through Kickstarter and still needs 60 percent of funding to reach her goal of $5,000. Why not forego a few holiday gifts this year and contribute to an artistic cause? After all, I can pretty much guarantee Aunt Lorna's never received a yurt in her honor and trust me --- she won't miss your fruitcake one bit.
