Anthro vs. Antho 1

Notice the similarities? Bedding from Anthology, at left, and the real Anthropologie, at right. Photos: Bed Bath & Beyond, Anthropologie

Like many people, I love Anthropologie's homewares. A recent trip to Bed Bath & Beyond has led to me to believe that BB&B must really love Anthropolgie. That is, if the age-old maxim that imitation is the highest form of flattery holds true.

While breezing through the Bed Bath & Beyond in Chelsea, a neighborhood in Manhattan, this past weekend, I walked by a bedding set-up and did a double-take. For a moment, I thought Anthropologie had licensed their name to Bed Bath & Beyond for a bedding line, but it turns out it was just an Anthropologie imposter!
Antho/Anthro Logos

Logos for Anthropologie and Anthology

Perhaps you can understand my confusion, BB&B's new line of bedding is called "Anthology" and the logo on the packaging is, ahem, reminiscent of Anthropolgie's own logo. (Please pardon my shoddy iPhone photo above.) You'll also note that the style of the Anthology line is in keeping with the real Anthro's boho vibe. Motifs include paisleys, florals and bird prints, the color schemes are of a similar earthy, but colorful palette.

While common wisdom holds that Anthropologie should feel flattered that Bed Bath & Beyond has worked so hard to copy Anthro's inimitable style, we suspect the designers at Anthropologie may be less than pleased.

Why are the pictures of the two bedding sets similar? Because they have a lot of pillows? I don't see a lot of similarity, what with the different patterns and colors. Sounds like a big stink over nothing important. NOTHING!

Take a look at the logos

That's ridiculous! Why would they copy? It only cheapens their brand, like they're the generic form of Anthropologie. Bad bad marketing on BB&B's part.

bed bath does not have its own line of anything. They purchase other manufacturers products. Never heard of Anthropologie anyway!

That's digging pretty deep to find similarities. BTW, I never heard of Anthropologie.

I'm sorry, but I really don't see the similarity. In fact, I find the BB&B bed to be more appealing, sophisticated, and uncluttered, although I would probably choose neither.

Anthropologie is located in larger cities. It has a modern/antique appeal. It has clothing, house wears, candles, and bedding. A store that would mostly attract females. Honestly, isn't that what cheaper fashion does anyway? Copy the more expensive designs? IF you liked the styles, and saw both in person, you would be able to tell the difference in the quality. Neither set is attractive, but the BB&B set would be cheaper made, and LOOK cheaper.

Well, just like in any industry people move on in their jobs...... designers move, merchandisers move, buyers move - when they move the ideas move with them. Small circles within any industry.
On the other hand the similarities I see are big, bold bodacious ugly prints that I would never ever purchase - I don't care who has them!
BBB has a much wider distribution - money talks...... they could purchase Anthropologie hook, line and sinker if they wanted to do it
"their way". I think Anthropologie is a niche market, like shabby chic was and won't last long........

They are similar in style. Anthropologie has been very popular with some consumers, but it is pricey, so BBB is smart to buy in products in a similar vein. The logo and name combinations are alike; to me Anthropologie's logo isn't so memorable so I probably wouldn't have noticed the similarity without Anthology being such a similar word. I'd guess Anthropologie buyers/designers won't be happy about it.
