When your kitchen is in need of a whole new look, it's easy to get caught up in stress-inducing thoughts of tearing up flooring tiles, sandblasting cabinets and installing plumbing fixtures. But, if you're lucky, sometimes all it takes is a simple refreshed facade.
Brooklyn-based interior designer Julia Mack recently took on a kitchen that was just a bit tired. The bones of the space were in fine shape, but it needed a little pick-me-up. All it took was some paint, new lighting and window treatments, the right accessorizing and a bit of a cleanup to get the room feeling like new again. And it could all be done over a short weekend on a tight budget.
Mack's top tip if you're about to tackle a kitchen redo? "Start by looking for balance in the space," she says. "You want to balance hard-edged cabinetry with soft drapery, or dark cabinetry with a light wall color." Once you've established those things, she adds, all it takes are some nice accents like colorful glassware and kitchen accessories and your space will feel like new.

It does look MUCH better, but where are all of her kitchen appliances? I know, for example, that I NEED my toaster/broiler oven out at all times - it's a real multi-tasker! Also, there's barely ANY work space on the counters -- (I realize that there was virtually none in the old photos) -- but it seems that the "decorative touches on the counter tops take up an awful lot of workspace! Looks great now, but a kitchen that tiny (and mine is SMALL) would really make me nuts!
