At this point, who hasn't made fun of Gwyneth Paltrow's lifestyle website GOOP?
The Huffington Post has called her lifestyle tips, on everything from where to stay while traveling to how to prepare a healthy meal, "painfully, ridiculously obvious," while Esquire snickered that following her regimen "wasn't much fun" and made the writer "quite a bit poorer." In Vanity Fair's September issue, writer Craig Brown spoofs the actress' secrets of inner happiness: "At one end of the room the kids are crying out for you to teach them how to make that truly great detox teriyaki salad with miso-nettle dressing. At the other end of the room there's a new movie script sent to you by the cuddly and awesome director Sam Mendes...Meanwhile, you are desperately trying to get your butt in great shape while nourishing your inner aspect by learning how to fold napkins in a way that will make them more ecologically sustainable."
Critics can pan Gwynnie all they want, but she – and GOOP (didn't she realize that her initials sounded like POOP?) – are here to stay. Gwyneth told a People reporter in July that the site, whose purpose is to "nourish the inner aspect," was a "big success." "It's crazy...crazy!" she bragged. "I just love it. Corporate America is knocking at my door."
And she's knocking on theirs. Despite reports that Gwyneth was overheard squashing talk of her wanting to become the next Martha Stewart, her actions seem to suggest anything but. Musician husband Chris Martin reportedly calls her business meetings, "the Martha meetings." She's working on a line of lifestyle products, she offers tips on green living and home design, she's toured Spain with Mario Batali for a PBS series and book, she's added cooking videos to her site and she sold a cookbook of family recipes entitled "My Father's Daughter" to Grand Central Publishing this year, set to be released in the fall of 2010. "People ask me, 'What is it? What are you doing?' And I don't know. I did it, am doing it...and I love doing it...I have all of this great information. It's just a gift," she has said.
In her most recent newsletter, Gwyneth shared her gift list with readers. She suggested personalized melamine plates by Em Tanner, which she says "quickly became a colorful basic in my kitchen this year," as well as one-of-a-kind framed prints she found on a shopping trip in Park Slope, Brooklyn. "What better way to show someone your love this gift-giving season than by giving a personalized present? With just a little forethought and organization, you can do something really special. Here is a list of fantastic places to take your Christmas/Chanukah up a notch," she writes.
This certainly sounds like someone building a brand – catch her warm and friendly tone -- and really, why shouldn't she control her own image? So often a celebrity is reflected through the prism of publicists, paparazzi and glossy magazine stories. But the internet allows celebrities to communicate directly with fans, albeit behind the safety of a Twitter account or blog. And if Gwyneth gets extreme pleasure from being an uber-wealthy, jetsetting homemaker, why shouldn't she share what she's learned on her terms, rather than giving up information to editors to run in their own publications?
Still, we had one burning question: if Gwyneth really is trying to be the next Martha Stewart, could she pull it off?
"I don't think they are remotely comparable," says Shannon Nelson of Pierce Mattie Public Relations, a marketing firm that specializes in developing beauty, home, fashion and lifestyle brands. "While there may be some overlay in the audience they reach, I think there is a generational gap between the two that would make them appeal to different demographics of women."
But couldn't Gwyneth carve out a different piece of the pie? Maybe she's the Body + Soul Magazine to Martha Stewart's Living. (Oh wait, Martha owns both!) While Martha is the crafty homemaker helping women live better, couldn't Gwyneth be the happy homemaker that helps women feel better?
Perhaps, but Nelson isn't convinced. "While Gwyneth seems to have seamlessly parlayed her acting career into a lifestyle brand, she remains remarkably unremarkable," she says. "Unless she brings in talent to help her with more creative projects to sustain her readers, GOOP will not continue its growth – at least not to the level and at the rate which Martha Stewart can command."
A number of celebrity homemakers have tried to compete with Martha Stewart. Take the queen of the 30-minute meal Rachael Ray and celebrity interior decorator and Oprah darling Nate Berkus. But no one has succeeded for one reason – Martha taps into something that no one else has been able to: perfection. Even if she did a stint in jail, readers are constantly surprised by her ideas, tips and the way that she's able to feel like everyone's wise, crafty and down-to-earth neighbor, despite the fact that she's worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
And that is why Gwyneth will never be the next Martha.
Gwyneth revels in her extravagant and too-much-time-on-her-hands lifestyle more than many average folks can stand for. She calls thousand dollar Bottega Veneta black riding boots a bargain and a roast chicken with potatoes and farmer's market salad "fast food." She tells you about the stunning hotels that she's stayed in around the world, not taking into account that the average reader would rather save a few pennies and pack it in at the Hilton Garden Inn down the street. Yes, Martha is also aspirational at times, but she's also downright accessible and affordable. Forget buying pricey boots -- Martha will tell you how to sew your own.
Gwyneth is selling a lifestyle that only a movie star's salary can support. If she wants to be the next Martha, GOOP will need to shift from the "fabulous life of Gwyneth Paltrow" to the "the fabulous life of Gwyneth Paltrow – on a budget."
Says Gwyneth: "I have this incredible, blessed, sometimes difficult, very lucky, very unique life and I've gotten to travel all over the place and to work and live in different cities. ... I go on tour with my husband and go to cities I would never necessarily go to. So I started accruing all of this information. I am the person my friends call when they want to know: 'I am redoing this bathroom and I want a sink that looks midcentury, but a contemporary version of a midcentury. Where should I go?' or 'How do I make your (recipes)?'... I thought this would be a fun, creative way to share with friends."
Yes, her very rich friends. But what about the rest of us?

Gweneth hates the US! That is why she moved to London.
ReplyI used to like Martha Stewart, she is definitely successful but I bet she is a cold hearted woman and her greed for money and fame come first, second and third..... in her life. Martha's comment about hating Sarah Palin because she finds her very boring, seems kind of ridiculous since it's hard to imagine Martha's being the life of the party. How much more boring can anyone get than Martha Stewart.
she moved to london because her husband is - english duh
And....
WHAT IS IT WITH GWYNETH PALTROW? OTHER ACTORS HAVE WON AN OSCAR AND THEN BOMBED, BUT SHE TAKES THE CAKE. SHE'S BEEN IN TOO MANY PICTURES WITH SECOND BILLING IN SMALL PARTS SINCE WINNING THE OSCAR, AND MANY OF THE PARTS HAVE BEEN ABYSMAL. NOW SHE WANTS TO BE ANOTHER WHAT'S-HER-NAME? WHERE'S YOUR DIGNITY, GWYNETH?
ReplyYou don't really think she won that oscar on her own merit, do you? Her parents (who I had never heard of) were connected to Hollywood and "Gynnie" was their daughter and the rest is history. She certainly did not win it because of talent and that is why she is now stuck with small parts that she perfoms miserably. She's a joke and everyone knows it but her! Now she wants to become a brand. Her parents will have to drag their friends to support her, yet again...
TO LILY..What?! You never heard of her parents, especially her mom? Her mom has been an accomplished actress for some time! Where have you been? You state that her parents will have to drag their friends to support Gwyneth again. Uh..G's dad DIED a while back, so I guess you mean parent not parentS. Geez!
I have never really liked Martha Stewart but I do respect her and admire her. Yes, she has millions, and lives the life of the very lucky but the woman has risen above all adversity and handles every challenge. She will never just "go quietly" but will reinvent herself and always be successful. Most women like Marth who would have been sent to prison would have killed themselves, but not Martha. she taught the inmates how to cook and sew and came back stronger. Gwineth Paltrow could never be another Mar tha Stewart. I;m just sorry I didn't buy Martha Stewart shares when she sank to rock bottom about the time she went to jail. How could I have doubted her. Bravo Martha! You are an incredible woman.
ReplyA few years back about the same period of the Dixie Chicks remarks Gwyneth Paltrow came out and told the world that she was ashamed of the United States and didnt want to bring her child up here. I have a nephew in the Marine Corp and currently in Afganistan for another 2 months. As far as Im concerned she is here making millions in the country she hates and living the good life mean while theres a bunch of young americans putting their life on the line everyday to protect this spoiled bratt who probably knows nothing about anything real with value..
ReplyI agree absolutely with what you are saying. I get so aggravated when someone talks about how bad they think it is in America, and how Americans themselves leave so much to be desired. I would like for everyone who has that feeling to not have an inch of American soil to stand on, or one American penny to go to their "selective" existences! Reminds me of the Viet Nam days when Jane Fonda and Joan Baez were going round with the Viet Cong, publically visiting with the enemy at the time. I remember seeing John Kerry on the news doing "sit-ins" with them back here on AMERICAN SOIL. Janie and Joanie should have been put out of the country and never allowed to work or make money here again. John Kerry burned his medals, and should not be allowed to be part of our governmental system. He should live somewhere in exile next door to Janie and Joanie. Gwyneth Paltrow is a glorified nobody. What I tend to remember most about her is that she and Anne Heche are an "ex-lesbian" couple. Lohan got great press out of her stint as such, but Paltrow still is memorably forgetable.
The Dixie Chicks never said anything bad about our Troops. They said that a war wasnt the answer for our country and that it would only benefit the President and his croonies.... and 8 years later, i think most would agree. They just werent popular with the sheeple at the time because, even though we (myself included at the time) had a fleeting sense of patroitism that in hind sight was just media/political induced. Listening to and understanding the unpopular side of a situation is truely enlightening.
I agree with you! 100%...Both, Martha stewart & gwenyth paltrow...Both in my opinion, ARE very boring , money hungry,(atleast Martha is more DOWN TO EARTH)..Gwenyth?? If you wanted to even try to be the next martha stewart, well, Your show would be the biggest flop! You don't even have the realization of how small a population of "the very rich" there really is in this country!Perhaps, that 5% population would be interested in your expensive "snobby" boots...Gwenyth, has to keep up with the jones's..Her friend "madge" or as we all know her madonna, moves to england..even has her very own brit accent lol...I bet Gwenyth has also Obtained her brit accent as well! Both woman, martha & gwenyth...ARE totally OVER-RATED woman with money! And of course her parents (gwenyth) have everything to do with her career as an actress, If your parents, siblings etc. become movie stars...it's more likely than not that their off springs will get into the business, regardless of their talent or skills..they make it work! I can see right through people, i have that great gift! And both women
especially gwenyth paltrow are very shallow..And gwen, come down off that high horse of yours because if it weren't for your momma or poppa, I doubt you would have the career & financial status that you do! And i can bet that you are the biggest stuck up snob in the industry..omg! why shallow?? pfff! 1,000 boots is a deal??ok,maybe 100.00 would be a deal, a thousand $$$'s would be a months of meals on my table! How is that for being DOWN TO EARTH!!
I subscribe to GOOP and I love it. I don't think Gwyneth is trying to be Martha. She's being who she is. I've never seen her use a pound of butter in anything. Her presentation includes a whole 'lifestyle'. A healthy well rounded one that incorporates wholesome delicious foods, taking care of body and spirit. I find her to be joyful and interesting. I can't afford everything she promotes but what's wrong with a little vicarious fun? Read GOOP:D
ReplyThough I sort of agree with you, I couldn't help but notice that you barely made an account today, December 13, 2009.
........Gwyneth?
Not only all of that, but she's also as dumb as a bag of hammers!
Replyexcuse me, but if gwenith can come up with a fresh grain fed turkey less than $59 for a 10 pound bird which is today's ad on martha's site, then god bless you. does martha really think america is stupid. $60 dollars for a bird less than the size of a duck which i can buy at walmart for $9? get a grip martha. i am looking forward to gwenith. and by the way, stop sending me overdue invoices for your martha magazine which i never subscribed to in the first place. you need to get new management in your corner honey, you obviously don't have a handle on how badly your company is being handled.
ReplyI used to like Martha Stewart, but no more. She revealed how nasty and catty and ugly she really is when she made disparaging remarks about Sarah Palin. Sarah is a successful self-made woman, like Martha - never used a father or husband(s) to get where she is. So you would think Martha would respect that. But, no. She's too damn liberal for that. And I just figured that out when I heard her.
Replygo right ahead.lambaste her again.
