Gifts to Please Crafty Types

Sometimes the hardest people to shop for are the ones who give the best gifts -- you know the type, your friend who gave you a handmade necklace last year and baked cookies for her entire office. It seems unfair to get these do-it-yourself types something made by someone else -- or worse, something from mass-produced from a chain store. So why not shop for goodies that will cater to their crafty instincts? As a crafty type, myself, I can safely say your handy friends and family will be thrilled to get any of these gifts.

These washi paper masking tapes have taken the design world by storm -- any crafter is bound to find dozens of uses for the colorful tapes. Washi Paper Masking Tape, $25, MoMA Store

A book full of 225 vintage-inspired patterns would be a treat for any crafter, but you can also print every pattern in this tome, making this not just a good, but an excellent gift. Reprodepot Pattern Book: Flora, $24.95, Chronicle Books

The subtitle of Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Crafts is accurate: This book is full of "endless inspiration" for every arty acquaintance on your list. Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Crafts: An A-to-Z Guide with Detailed Instructions and Endless Inspiration, $18.90, Amazon.com

Amateur shutterbugs will be thrilled to receive this flexible, portable miniature tri-pod. (It'll be the perfect thing to steady your pal's camera while snapping shots for her Etsy shop.) Original Gorillapod, $23, Photojojo

Why settle for boring black or blue? Give the gift of color for less than $8 -- it's sure to inspire all the creative souls in your life. Color Pen (36 colors), $7.95, Muji

Celebrate the simple with an old-school sun printing kit -- these sunshine developed prints make even everyday objects into magical images. Sun Print Kit, $6, The Curiosity Shoppe Online

If your crafty friend doesn't have a label maker yet, this is a foolproof gift -- trust us, it may not seem exciting, but anyone who gets one becomes addicted. Brother P-Touch PT-1010 Portable Home and Office Labeler, $28.95, B&H

Whether it is used to store pens and pencils or to hold a cup of jo, either of these clever mugs from Fishs Eddy will speak to a designer's sensibilities. Memo Graph Paper Mug, $6.50 and Memo Notebook Mug, $12.95, Fishs Eddy

Your handy friend would never buy this luxurious Xacto knife set for him or herself, but boy, would any D.I.Y.-er be thrilled to receive it. Xacto X5282 Basic Knife Set, $16.29, Amazon.com
