What you think of as the classic Christmas route (you know the look: evergreen garland, cloisonne ornaments, boxwood wreath) may not be "classic" to someone else.
If you're a child of the 50s and 60s (or a child or grandchild of someone stuck in them) then your holidays may have consisted of a fake flocked tree, a rainbow of colors and Jetsons'-like ornaments.
Personally, I'm a sucker for color and funky shapes, so I'd always secretly wished I was part of that era. And so it's no surprise that the brightly hued retro-Christmas look is totally my speed. To achieve it yourself, give your natural tree an over-the-top flocking or opt for a faux white or silver option. If you're a bit hesitant to "taste the full rainbow," pick two or three colors and stick with them throughout your theme.
Feeling edgy? Go wild with a decor featuring every color under the sun. When it comes to decorating the tree, stay simple. One consistent shape, like all balls, will prevent the ghost of tacky past from making an appearance. A repeated set of three shapes, like the MoMA ornaments below, is OK too, just be sure to keep all other ornaments throughout the rest of the room to a minimum and let those shapes shine.
Feeling mildly nostalgic? Go old-school retro with wild punches of color.
