Make your backyard twice as large with our easy tip! Photo: Swamplot
After spotting the mirrored backyard of a Houston bungalow, my brain began to spin with dreams of a reflective paradise of my own. Mirrors! They're the perfect way to double a tiny back yard or cover an unsightly privacy fence. I can't believe I didn't think of it before.
Although I love the idea of hanging a basic row of outdoor mirrors against a privacy fence, why not get a bit more decorative with a gorgeous two tile design mirror? The look creates a Mediterranean hideaway that will turn an everyday backyard into a private entertaining space. Even better? Your tiniest of backyards will seem acres larger.
Of course, keep your eyes peeled for outdoor mirrors only. No one wants to run barefoot in the green grass and stumble across shattered glass. Modern mirror-coatings can be found in many outdoor models, but if you're having trouble spotting them, try for these alternatives to glass:
1. Weatherproof acrylic mirror sheeting looks like glass, but is much less breakable, less likely to cause injury and is lighter in weight.
2. Polished stainless steel, although not 100% flat, can contribute to the same illusionary effect as a mirror.
Add lush greens and conceptual bushes to keep the look open, fresh and inviting. You'll have the largest backyard on the block, even if you have the smallest acreage!

And who is going to clean those mirrors after every rainstorm or clean off the pollen, etc?
ReplyOnly someone with too much money and no common sense.
Mirrors are a bad idea however the bamboo is a good idea. Many Home owners do not know that they can grow palm trees in their area
If you are In a zone 6a or warmer (search usda hardiness zones). You can grow a palm tree.

This article and the suggestion is just stupid.
ReplyThis idea, on the surface, looks interesting, HOWEVER...I hate to think how many animals and birds (ESPECIALLY birds) will be injured or die because of confusion due to these mirrors. When the sun bounces off, they lose their perspective and when they are flying or running, they will run right into them. Haven't you ever seen birds fly into plate glass windows? This seems pretty dangerous to me and totally not worth it. Just enjoy your yard as it is please.
ReplyJane: I agree with you.
ReplyThe title of the article is laughable.
The suggestions offered do nothing to increase the size of a yard.
They may increase the apparent size to someone who is totally wiped out on drugs.
But, that is about it.
Where do these idiots come up with this crap?
Dilema: making a back yard appear bigger. Solution: Of course would be to move to a place with a bigger back yard. However, for a lot of us; that is NOT a solution.
ReplyFor over fifteen years, hubby and I lived in a duplex with a patio and small, fenced in back yard in which, over the years; I had a pond, (which we later filled back in and became a grave for our beloved dog).
Also, I learned how to garden with both veggies and flowers. Also, in this space, our dog, Bogie (pit bull mix) had to have his room as well. I sure learned how to use this space as beneficially as possible over the years.
It's all a matter of trial and error. If one thing doesn't work; take it out and try something else. Of course, the perfect solution would be to draw your yard to scale on a piece of graf paper and plan everything out from there. But, that wasn't for me.
After all the hard work I put into the place...both inside and out; we were asked to move due to remodeling. Now, after two years in this rented house, we have to move again...due to selling the house. Now, instead of being interviewed as a tenent; 'I' am going to do some interviewing myself for potential landlords. We're too old and my husband is too ill to keep moving all the time.
Good luck to all of you in your backyard makeover.

In reading over these comments; I am amazed to see that there is apparently NO moderator. These comments are 'suppose' to be in regard to the issues at hand...in this case, a back yard makeover. Instead, I see comments in regard to what apparently is a cross-over to "The Lonely Hearts Club". That, and scammers out there wanting to gain access to your hard-earned cash to start a so-called 'business at home'. PLEASE...Would someone take control of these comments and allow posts ONLY in regard to the subject at hand?
ReplyThank you.
What about the heat that will be generated from mirrors? It could actually start a fire couldn't it?
