At the Tavern on the Green auction, everything -- including the topiary menagerie -- must go!
The famed New York City restaurant, which opened in 1934, served its last meal on New Year's Eve, and now the public has a chance to bid on the items inside and out that helped make Tavern on the Green a landmark of fine dining for decades.
The public auction is running January 13 and 14, and the objects are currently available to preview at the restaurant. (If you can't get to New York, take a virtual tour on Tavern on the Green's website.)
"We've left everything in place so you can see how it was in the restaurant," says Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey's, the auction house handling the sale.
Up for auction are 50 chandeliers made of Tiffany and Baccarat crystal, 41 Moet Champagne buckets, disco balls, even a decorated Christmas tree. "They had a very sizeable warehouse," Ettinger says. "Items over the years have been moved back and forth. Things from the warehouse continue to be shipped here."
The auction, conducted in partnership with LiveAuctioneers.com, offers something for everyone, Ettinger said.
"There are thousands of items that could be used for every imaginable buyer. One could recreate the Tavern on the Green experience for the home," he said.
"It's really remarkable."
