Winter florals emerged in the fashion industry about a year ago, and just as expected, we're now seeing them in home decor.

What are winter florals? "Floral patterns that are used outside of the spring and summer season," says designer Andrea Sosa Fontaine. "In the summer and spring seasons, florals are bright, airy and often shown in a lighter and softer pattern." Winter florals, on the other hand, are typically heavier in pattern or feature larger floral prints. The colors are deep and rich.

This season we're seeing lots of winter florals in purples and blues, says Andrea. And we're excited to incorporate the look into our homes. "It brings us out of the darkness of winter and helps us get through it," says Andrea. "Although most flowers aren't blooming, the colors used in winter florals are the same colors used in winter fashion." Therefore, they translate into the home just like they do in fashion, while also helping us look forward to the next season.

I asked Andrea if she had any tips for decorating with winter florals. She said the trick is using them in moderation. Since they are larger prints in deeper or darker colors, they can overwhelm a space, just like bright summer florals. "The safest way to design with winter florals is to find a floral that you love and make it the only winter floral in your space. That way you can change it out, just like the seasons," Andrea explains.

One way to add winter florals to your decor is through wallpaper on an accent wall or through the use of accent fabrics, pillows, bedding and even dinnerware. Looking for inspiration? Here are some great winter florals:

Adding winter florals is easy by just switching out some of your accent pieces like pillows or bedding.
