The whimsical design above is part of the Brickseries by 25-year-old Dutch designer, Pepe Heykoop. The Brickchair began as a reaction to a line drawing by artist James Gulliver Hancock (in the background of the exhibition image of the chair above). Designer Pepe Heykoop says the chair in the left corner of Hancock's sketch caught his eye. Something about the drawing's chunky shapes made Heykoop think of bricks (aka children's building blocks). Heykoop decided to try his hand at realizing his imagined chair.
The end result is a playful and imaginative rumination on our idea of a chair -- and it bears a striking resemblance to Hancock's drawing. As Heykoop has said, "The Brickchair is the interpretation of a drawing, which was already an interpretation of an old existing chair. It transformed twice and ended up in bricks. We see different things in the same image."
After creating the Brickchair, Heykoop started building a Brickchandelier The end result is a chandelier composed of more than 1,000 blocks that stretches over 61/2 feet wide. We can't wait to see what will be next in Heykoop's Brickseries. The Brickseries will soon be taken into production by cutting-edge furniture producer, Furnism.
