A Senate seat isn't the only thing the Kennedy family has lost.

In light of the major upheaval in the U.S. Senate, most people may have missed a small Kennedy-related item reported by the blog Things That Inspire. The blog reports that three of the Kennedy clan's estates are up for sale or recently sold.

Following the deaths of both Eunice Shriver (sister of President John F. Kennedy and Sens. Robert F. and Edward M. Kennedy) and Edward Kennedy in August, the family is letting go of the places where many of their family memories were made. To make these real estate transactions even more bittersweet, the two completed sales were also markedly below the original asking prices.

On January 11, The Washington Post reported that Hickory Hill, the McLean, Virginia mansion of Ethel and Robert Kennedy sold for $8.25 million after seven years on the market (see house below).

The original listing of $25 million may seem like a lot, but when you consider the house was home to Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, John F. Kennedy and RFK, the final sale price seems like a downright bargain for a piece of American history. Oh yeah, did we mention that the home was also once the Civil War headquarters of Union Army Gen. George McClellan?

Back in August, The Wall Street Journal reported the sale Eunice Kennedy Shriver's Maryland estate (below).

Shriver's home sold for $7.81 million, 34% less than its original offering price.

Finally, the Washington, D.C. home of Senator Edward Kennedy is currently for sale through Sotheby's International (below).

The listing describes the house as, "Located on the best block in the premiere neighborhood of Kalorama, if not the best block in all Washington, this historic house defines entertainment. Whether dinners for national and international dignitaries, fundraising receptions, celebrated birthday parties, or family gatherings, many a special event and special people have graced this elegant residence. Its stately exterior and grand rooms, however, do not compromise its function as a family home. Warmth, light and serenity fill every room." You'll note there is no specific mention that Senator Edward Kennedy, the liberal lion of the Senate, resided here for the last decade.

One thing that Things That Inspire did not note is how similar looking all three of these estates are:

Three Kennedy homes

I was struck at just how classic and timeless both the interiors and the exteriors of the Kennedy homes are. We hope the future owners will preserve the memory of this family's distinct American style.

It is the end of the era of "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." The Kennedy's brought out the best in us and they will be sorely missed.

William, I couldn't agree more, the Kennedy's were wonderful, generous people. They have done so much for the Country, to all the haters out there (Heidi) What have you done for your Country?!

  • Kathy

They were from another time and place, when life seemed good in America. I don't recall there being a division in our country then, and when Kennedy was elected he was simply the President, like Ike was before him. Those who weren't alive then don't know what a positive President he was and can't imagine that for three days we watched footage of the funeral procession over and over while we all mourned, but that's the way it was. It left a hole in our hearts to have an assassin kill our President, something like that hadn't happened in modern times.
Those who sow hatred and division don't do anything good for this country; remember, it's divide and conquer. While you bicker and snipe you are not really paying attention to what is going on, are you?

Heidi--what an ugly heart and soul you have. Sadly, you and others like you are the reason this great democratic experiment will fail. If you consider yourself a "Christian" then it's seriously time for some soul-searching--your's, not someone else's. . . .

The Kennedy's may have brought some good out of some Americans, but they kept the best for themselves. It all started withe ill-gotten gains during prohibition, and it never stopped. Only God knows how many lives they helped destroy.

Did he ever have an abortion, or did anyone in his family? They're Catholic. They realized, though, that not everyone else is. John Kennedy was elected only after making it clear that the Pope would not be ruling this country through him.

GOOD RIDDANCE TO ALL OF THEM!

You people are idiots!! I guess you are satisfied with the current status of our country. I guess you like to work for a government who supports welfare recipient's so that they can stay home and give birth to more welfare recipient's. Oh wait!!! Are you on welfare? This country is heading downhill with no upswing in sight!! Without people like the Kennedy's we're in BIG trouble!!!! Idiots!!!!!!

Shelby I so agree with what you stated!

Carrie - I could not agree with you more. It is always interesting to me that people make comments on situations where they have no first hand knowledge, but rather recant what they read or make up in their heads. Be it Kennedy's, or the Bushe's. etc.; unless you have intimate, first hand knowledge, then your comments are purely emotional and speculative. Spend your time on something constructive.

    where's my violin?
I wonder how Ted Kennedy afforded such a home?
he and the rest of Congress must be overpaid.

You wonder how Ted Kennedy afforded such a home? Well, houses cost a lot less then, even big houses, and he was a senator and lived in DC for a long time. I'm sure someone in Washinton will buy it, and it would be interesting to see who.
I'm not sure what the comment about a violin means, because these homes are being sold after the owners are gone. Their children are grown up and have lives of their own. Time to move on.

No Shriver children ever lived in the Potomac house and no Edward Kennedy children ever lived in the EMK Washington, DC home. Thus, the family memories point is a bit out of whack.

The Kennedys do not inspire me. They are hypocrites who buy into the spin that they our American royalty. The "green" Kennedy, Joseph, is fighting a wind farm off Cape Cod because it would block his view. The Kennedys fought against a low income housing project in the 60's because it was going to be built too close to one of their mansions. They want to tax us to help the poor while they continue to hold on to their millions. Ted was notorious for his drinking and womanizing. It makes me sick to see all these mansions that they own, and this is just a few of them.

I've read about that wind farm in sailing magazines. It's in Nantucket Sound, out in the water in areas where sailboats (and other boats I suppose) go, and I'm thinking wow, not a real brainy idea there. And then there's the whole scenic aspect, a beautiful place dispoiled for everyone. But I can't get my mind off the vision of one of these huge windmills hitting a boat. We have wind farms near us in CA and they cause big problems with migratory birds I guess they never thought about. I'd think about it. These are huge windmills.
