A Senate seat isn't the only thing the Kennedy family has lost.

In light of the major upheaval in the U.S. Senate, most people may have missed a small Kennedy-related item reported by the blog Things That Inspire. The blog reports that three of the Kennedy clan's estates are up for sale or recently sold.

Following the deaths of both Eunice Shriver (sister of President John F. Kennedy and Sens. Robert F. and Edward M. Kennedy) and Edward Kennedy in August, the family is letting go of the places where many of their family memories were made. To make these real estate transactions even more bittersweet, the two completed sales were also markedly below the original asking prices.

On January 11, The Washington Post reported that Hickory Hill, the McLean, Virginia mansion of Ethel and Robert Kennedy sold for $8.25 million after seven years on the market (see house below).

The original listing of $25 million may seem like a lot, but when you consider the house was home to Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, John F. Kennedy and RFK, the final sale price seems like a downright bargain for a piece of American history. Oh yeah, did we mention that the home was also once the Civil War headquarters of Union Army Gen. George McClellan?

Back in August, The Wall Street Journal reported the sale Eunice Kennedy Shriver's Maryland estate (below).

Shriver's home sold for $7.81 million, 34% less than its original offering price.

Finally, the Washington, D.C. home of Senator Edward Kennedy is currently for sale through Sotheby's International (below).

The listing describes the house as, "Located on the best block in the premiere neighborhood of Kalorama, if not the best block in all Washington, this historic house defines entertainment. Whether dinners for national and international dignitaries, fundraising receptions, celebrated birthday parties, or family gatherings, many a special event and special people have graced this elegant residence. Its stately exterior and grand rooms, however, do not compromise its function as a family home. Warmth, light and serenity fill every room." You'll note there is no specific mention that Senator Edward Kennedy, the liberal lion of the Senate, resided here for the last decade.

One thing that Things That Inspire did not note is how similar looking all three of these estates are:

I was struck at just how classic and timeless both the interiors and the exteriors of the Kennedy homes are. We hope the future owners will preserve the memory of this family's distinct American style.

DANO DUMB ST-- HEAD . Get a life and get off welfare. I found this web-site by accident but it appears that your life is just about nothing. Find a use for your actions that are so hostile. Get a job blowing up buildings or something to release your anger. And I am talking a demolition job not being a stupid idiotic terrorist. Maybe you will then have a life.

Kleo- I am a taxpayer and I help Americans that need help, people who deserve it,not lazy people who dont want to work. I support many charities including animals. I will always support my country but I will not support other countries. We already pay enough taxes with all the illegals in this country, they should all be sent back or let another country take them. If you want to go to Haiti go ahead thats your problem not mine, I will take care of my own people here. As far as the Kennedy's they are alcoholics and murderers and they have gotten away with too much already, they all need to go and soon.

Hiedi - You are correct. I don't really know the Kennedy's so therefore my opinions are just that - opinions. From what I have read, and I was alive during the Mary Jo Kopeckne death, Ted Kennedy was at fault and I agree that it appears that justice was not done. By the same token, unless you have proof of the Marilyn Monroe death being caused by the Kennedy's, you simply have an opinion. If you have indisputable proof, you had better talk to the authorities, because it seems to me the death of Marilyn Monroe is still being debated by experts and there has never been conclusive proof. As for condeming the entire family Heidi, I just don't get it. Have you ever been involved with the Special Olypmics? A Kennedy founded and endowed charity that has done wonders for special needs individuals. Just some thoughts, have a good night.

I once read, in one of the biographies, that at the Kennedy compound whenever the buildings, homes, garages etc needed repainting, everything that faced the street was repainted but not the side facing the sea!
To be fair that was also the practice among the other wealthy families who owned mansions there! A friend, who was once invited sailing with area residents nearby, confirmed this! Apparently it was a waste of time to paint as the salt compromised it almost immediately!

Whatever one may think politically of the Kennedys, they are a big piece of the quilt of this country.

I always try to vote for the man, not the party, and never vote a straight ticket. My father was in politics, but he didn't expect me to vote for his party.

I don't think I voted for JFK, but voted for the other guy, who won a later presidential election. And we all know what happened to him.

The Kennedy's are the best ! love all of them, they might be rich , and most people are very jealous of them. but they have had there share, of back luck. But they were for the poor, and they fought for the poor. there only mistake was not getting all the welfare bum's jobs, they fought for all the lazy welfare people.

The Kennedys were nothing but low class shanty Irish crooks, drunks and compulsive sex addicts. JFK is famous primarily for having been murdered. Ted was famous for having killed someone and not being punished for it. Although being denied the presidency is a decent sort of punishement I should think. If it hadn't been for Mary Jo Kopechne's death, we would have had that big hoary loudmouth drunk for a president. So,she did not die in vain. Robert Kennedy was also a compulsive sex addict, not to mention a very whiney elitist prick and liar.

    Heidi:

Conspiracy theorists have long insisted that the Kennedy's were to blame for Marilyn Monroe's death. The truth, however, is far simpler and far less controversial -- Marilyn was a drug addict, and had been for many years. Considering the sheer volume and combination of drugs she was taking in her final years (not to mention her abuse of alcohol), it's surprising she even lived to age 36. (It's been written that she had, in fact, overdosed on at least two other occasions, both times having been "rescued" by concerned friends before it was too late.)

Say what you will, but this is one you can't pin on the Kennedy's.
