We have an antidote to boring wall art -- Hang an eye-catching collection of plates on the wall.

From classic sets of antique porcelain to mismatched collections of thrift store finds, plates make excellent wall art. The repetition of round shapes is graphic on its own, while the patterns of the plates add to the allure. China collectors have displayed their dishes on walls for decades, and these days, plates are having a renaissance as wall art. However, the new trend is anything but traditional. (If plates aren't your thing, check out some other awesome collections worth hanging on the wall courtesy of Apartment Therapy: Pez dispensers, jewelry and much more)

You can hang plates anywhere in the house, not just in dining spaces. The composition may be from formal and gridded or completely natural and free-formed. However you chose to display your plates, it'll be easier to create your design if you trace each plate onto kraft paper and arrange the pieces of paper on the wall first. Then follow the advice from this ShelterPop post on how to hang plates on the wall safely.

The current plate-on-the-wall trend arguably began when interior designer Kelly Wearstler used them on an outdoor wall (shown above) at the Viceroy Hotel.

Antique china and furnishings don't mean you can't have a little fun. These vintage plates of varying sizes and patterns feel a little bohemian in their random arrangement.

A personal collection of similar-but not-matching plates can easily be added to one plate at a time when arranged in a cluster like the ones shown in this home.

This grouping of Marimekko plates feels especially contemporary with its bold colors and graphic patterns.

Traditional blue and white delft china looks fresh when placed against a white wall and arranged in a random pattern.

What?? Kelly Wearstler invented the "plate-on-the-wall trend"??Don't be absurd, you silly, stupid woman! Plates on walls, grouped en masse, have been around for centuries.

A little less Desperate Housewives, and a little more book learnin', might do you some good!

A little less snark and a little more manners might do you even more.

You are correct. Nothing new in using plates on walls. But the pictures were nice.

Shame on you snark... Your comments were rude and thoughtless. I certainly hope that you do not speak to your children or elders with such a tone. Calling someone stupid is totally unacceptable, especially in a public forum such as this. Sorry if you think that this whole thing abut decorating walls with plates is as old as the hills...Perhaps it is...and perhaps you could speak to another with grace and class...instead of the crass path you chose to follow. Shame on you! I'm certain that your Mother taught you better than that!

I have enjoyed looking at beautiful plate arrangements on walls for years. My Mother-in-law taught me, many years ago, how to make artificial flower arrangements in different kinds of bowls of all sizes...she demonstrated in my lovely wooden salad bowl, which has been my most lovely Thanksgiving center-piece since the 1970s. Garage sales are wonderful sources of plates & bowls.

MY TWO CENTS: I have enjoyed hanging platters and plates as wall art for years....love the aesthetic....however, A WARNING TO ALL: I had a beautiful handmade plate from 1905, painted by a friend's aunt, with beautiful peacocks. Gorgeous piece. I purchased $15 GUARANTEED NOT TO FAIL plate hangers. Two months later, came home to a disaster. The beautiful Peacock Plate, which hung at the top of the grouping, sprung itself from the guaranteed hanger, destroying itself and several others it took with it on the way down to the floor. And these were hung in an archway, some 10 feet up. THANK GOODNESS no one was underneath them. I tried not to cry, but I did. Now all my plates and platters are in wrought iron holders, some of which are so interesting....a little less random, a whole lot safer. Some of my plates are 150 years old.

I was so very sorry to read about your unfortunate disaster. We all seem to learn things the hard way. Good luck to you from now on.

Those plates in the pictures are very pretty, but I'd like to know where they GOT them. I've haunted thrift stores and yard sales for eons, and I've noticed people get rid of dish sets that frankly aren't that special. Any stray interesting or beautiful plates must get snapped up by early bird pickers who hawk them on eBay. And - I already have a lot of artwork, photos, and collectible plates (gifts from years ago) on my walls. Where would I put all these plates if I could find them??? I don't own a vast empty McMansion, after all.

Have you tried www.replacements.com? Their selection is second to none. The majority of their patterns are online, along with images and additional pattern information.

Their website is user friendly, their staff is very helpful - I have ordered from them numerous times, for my crystal, china and silver patterns.

    Good luck on your search.

Estate sales, yard sales, and antique stores are great places to find unique collections of old plates. You can match them in color schemes or just patterns you like together. Check out estatesbylola.com for upcoming estate sales in the Northern California, Nevada, and Idaho areas. And don't forget to stop when you see an estate sale sign. They are so much fun.

Now, now, Pollyanna.....don't get your braids in a twist, hon. I'm quite sure the extra pressure exerted on your empty head due to the stress of thinking of something original would cause it to pop off of your shoulders.

I agree. I always thought plate arrangements on the wall was ugly. Buy yourself a picture and leave the plates on a table.

I also think they are very unattractive. They look like nickel and dime decorating, just cheap looking. But allowing for different tastes is the way of decorating.
