Why Perfection Is Dead

Last week, ShelterPop attended a conference for design bloggers in which we schmoozed, laughed and talked shop with various Internet celebrities regarding the future of design and social media alike.

One of those Internet celebrities? Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of Apartment Therapy, who is just as charming as his mega-site.

However, in his keynote speech, Gillingham-Ryan fired up quite the debate, stating that "Martha Stewart is sooooooo over."

Of course, in context, the claim made sense. Perfection is dead, in more ways than one. With the economy on the fritz and dozens of shelter magazines closing their doors, it's no wonder lovers of decor are tuning into their own personal style to furnish their home. The result? An eclectic mix of period pieces, classic furnishings and hand-me-downs from family and friends.

Forget perfectly-styled Chippendale chairs surrounding a polished dining room table. And over-sized, crystal chandeliers against a paisley-wallpapered entryway? Not for long. "Pretty" is taking a backseat to "quirky," and we're right on board with the trend.

And although we love our dear Martha Stewart, we can't help but wonder if this new decade will welcome a new face of home living and decor: the face of imperfection.

And yes, we still love Martha. Want proof? Read on:

Oh please. She doesn't have home decoration like that in her magazine and hasn't for years....it seems like he constructed the perfect sound bite for people to pick-up on the web, as I got this link in a Google alert. How silly. She's the QUEEN of eclectic...when is the last time that guy looked in her magazine?

Perception of her perfectionism is what he is talking about. Home decorating is not.

You are all wrong!!!!! I have met Martha on a couple of occasions in Maine where we both live! She is a sweet and wonderful lady! She is talented in all areas of homemaking, decorating, etc. Although we are not in a close relationship, I feel she has been my constant friend and mentor for decades. She has taught me many many things, and because of her I have a very lovely home.
I do not have a lot of money and not everything is perfection, but it is comfortable and beautiful in a cozy, homey way THANKS TO MARTHA!
In addition, she has taught me many things about cooking and baking. I am famous among my friends because of this and VERY grateful to Martha!
I think you had better go back and take another look through clearer eyes!

As a fan of M. Stewart... I take a little offense to your comment,
not a huge problem since it is simply your asinine opinion.
You know it does take a pompous ass to know a pompous ass.
"pompous" now that sounds like a M. Stewart favorite word.

Even though fashions change, Martha helped many young wives, house keepers, etc., who really needed to know the basics of keeping house and beautifying their homes. So, they will always retain the gratitude they feel for this clever woman who simplified the mysteries of making a house a home. She will always be a fond memory for those women and will never be "soooo over."

Some of us will never be 'over' Martha. Doing your best should never go out of style.

Why don't You get over it ! Still cynical & sarcastic since the election, you should find someone in the Bush adm. to vent your
hate upon since he's the villian in the country's mess.

Many of my friends have done the "trendy" look. and is interesting as it is the first visit it grows old fast. Many of them have "redone" back to a more traditional homey look

What is actually "so over", is ignorant, behind the times idiots, making "declarations" about the programs which they, themselves have no interest in, and then announce that those "declarations" are true for the rest of us. Martha still gives young brides and other young homemakers wonderful ideas on creating beautiful surroundings. She also creates wonderful food which is not too difficult to make, and which others feel they can do themselves. I will always enjoy her shows on TV and hope she will be around as long as Julia was. She is actually better than Julia, so it shouldn't be hard for her to keep her audience.

Oh please, Martha has always been about putting together a table setting, decorations, interior design, etc. based on what is available to the individual. She is very "green" incorporating heirloom items, antiques shop finds, and the like into your home.

Who died and made your opinion THE WORD? I can't stand Obama, but I am a Dem who also detested Bush, Cheney et al.

Martha has her issues and has made mistakes like others - no better, no worse. What I have always like about Martha is that she strives for perfection ins showing us ways to do things nicer, gives us inspiration to use what we have, or demonstrate our affection in more ways to those we love. Any old stuck up ass can put on a show and act like they are the last word. I think Martha is a very smart business woman who turned interests in improving our homes, learning new ways to do things, how to decorate and be more gracious as hosts and hostesses. I love her ideas for food and goodies for entertaining. I am very creative, but I have ALWAYS learned something from her shows, magazines and books. I have given each of my two sisters a different one of martha's holiday entertaining books, which they loved. What is wrong with wanting to make guests and family feel more welcome, enjoy celebrations more while in our homes? Grow up and try to figure out what is wrong with you that you have only hateful things to say about a person who has made an entire industry out of becoming a domestic diva and better yet teaching US how to be domestic divas as well?

Well AOL said they were going to check on idiots like those trying to sell things, lonely hearts looking for love, etc. Guess that hasn't happened YET! Anyway, for all you "Martha Lovers" out there...yeah I've used SOME of her recipes, they turned out fabulous...IF you have the time. Martha has WAY too much time on her hands and so do YOU! JMHO!

What kind of person Martha Stewart is depends on how you know her and how long you've known her. I've never met her, but have worked with people who have. Their opinion of her was not very nice. Nothing she's said or done has gotten me happy or angry. I suppose you'd have to be interested in her and what she does to feel anything about her. To me she is a "never was".

Live and let live for heaven's sake. No one has to listen to Martha if they hate her. Some folks thinks their personal endorsement is required for anybody to have a TV show or magazine. Turn the channel. Buy a soap opera magazine. But please stop thinking that you should be choosing for everyone else. I am no fan of reality shows. I am evidently in the minority as they are dominating the air waves just now. I watch the shows I like plus lots of movies from Netflix. Don't bother trying to insult me, it doesn't work on me. I am happy.
