Neutral is in! Credit: Kirsten Grove
Why not display your books backwards on your bookshelves, so the pages face outward and the spine is hidden? Not only will those gold gilded pages shine, but your otherwise chaotic bookcase will look instantly streamlined. Add a few white sculptures and some neutral textures and you'll have a well-styled library worthy of the Smithsonian.
Of course, keep your frequent reads close by for easy access as they may be hard to find in a sea of flipped spines! Happy styling!

This has to be one of stupidest decorating ideas I have ever heard of. Duh, some people actually keep books to READ and not just decorate. How would you browse your selection. I also love to look at the types of books people have in their bookcases...You can tell alot about them from what they choose to read. Lets hope this doesnt catch on.
ReplyI thought I was the only one who thought this was a stupid idea. I actually use my books all the time for reference. Thanks for letting me know that I am not the only one who thinks this is a dumb idea.
My sentiments exactly. How dumb is that? Stupid idea.
as a master carpenter, i see these so called "interior decorators " all the time on renovations, and it never ceases to amaze me that they actually get paid (sometimes over paid ) to do this no talent job, while i'm always doing structural and precise high end moldings, and getting paid peanuts, oh well, nobody ever told me life is fair.
Well, if what you like to see is paper, not the the book covers, just
buy reams of paper. Stack them any way you want, and your shelves will be as empty from words and coherent thought as your brain!
I don't know who screens this stuff, but this is just plain stupid.
I agree, this is moronic, maybe try turning dressers around so you don't have to look at the handles! WHere do these decorators get their ideas OR their clients?
Amen! My first thought was: Is she kidding with this crappy idea? And my second thought was, who has books in which all their pages are edged in gold gilt? I happen to have real books of all kinds and all covers and all papers, and I'd say less than 10% of mine have gold gilt edged pages!!
If you want to shift your bookcase to freshen its look, have some books upright, & have others flat & stacked, and have the books grouped by size uniformity and subject type... But ALWAYS have the SPINE & title showing!
MY bookcase is to house books I actually read, not to have it look like kindergarteners put the books back incorrectly (and no, it WON'T make it look pretty to do it the way this article writer idiotically suggested!)...
I agree with most of the comments here. If this is what designers think then no wonder they give such stupid ideas, they don't know how to read and thus must have never had much of an education. I am amazed how people think just because someone says "I know what I am talking about and you have to do things this way.......this week" Dumb dumb dumb idea.
I was thinking the same thing....OMG...and they go to school to learn this?
AMEN!!!
ReplyThis is insanely dumb. What? Display books so you can't tell what they are? I get books to READ them not to sham-decorate. ! Also, the page edges will NOT be pristine white, but dirty white.
ReplyI cannot tell you how many homes I have visited decorated in white -- NONE looked fresh. All looked slightly to seriously shabby, grubby, and tired. Decorators need to get off this worn-out kick of decorating in white. It doesn't work with pets, it doesn't work with children, and it doesn't work with living.
I agree, Dana. Decorating with white is not practical. It may look good in a movie or magazine, but is not "life Friendly" even for a single, clean freak. All white interior is just begging for beauty. It reminds me of the most basic starter apartment. I also remember a friend of mine once saying that she hated white in her home because it reminded her of living on a military base. The on base housing provided was all the same, every town they moved to. Always white, always the same floorplan and just unimaginative. She grew to hate it.
The photo is somewhat pretty. But actually, although I see what they were going for, it looks incomplete to me. The chair looks out of place being so big and dark. And the little table is a very strange modern item, and the wrong color for the rest of the room. You have an all white room, with an acrylic or glass lamp. The table should have been silver, not that bronzy color, and a different design, maybe pretty scrolled metal or mirrored table legs, not that modern cage like thing. This design is a miss for me.
Count me as one of the many who think this is about as stupid as it gets.........apparently this is a "design trick" for people who look upon books as mere decoration, not a form of self-education and enjoyment......idiots......
ReplyI've seen enough "white" this week to last a lifetime. Would you believe MD is the snowiest state in the entire US?? As for this decorating idea..how much does the genius get paid who came up with this? My pages are dog-eared, off white and far from "golden"! Besides, I like to see the titles.
ReplyGlad to know I'm not the only one who thinks this is a totally dumb, ridiculous idea. When I read the headline, I thought maybe the article was going to say instead of standing them vertical, lay them down horizontal, which is also a cheap way to change the look of a bookcase. As someone who LOVES books, I can't imagine going into someone else's home and not being able to read the titles of the books in the bookcase. The books in a person's home (or lack thereof) give interesting insight into who the person is. Flipping them so the pages face out just tells me a person is shallow, faddish and plain stupid! Sorry, I try to believe that no idea is a bad idea, but I just can't find the worthiness in this idea.
ReplyThis is easy and inspiring! Shelves full of books always look cluttered. You could sew cute little white slipcovers for all your books!! And tie a bue or brown grosgrain ribbon arould each one, for a chic spa look. Or you could spraypaint them all! With this tip it doesn't matter what books you own. You can go to yard sales, buy all the books that are the right size, spraypaint them white, arrange them on your shelves, and graciously accept the compliments that will surely follow.
ReplyI'm still laughing! Great idea!
Wow, really? You're going to buy books from a garage sale and spray paint them? How much more disrespect can you show to someone's investment? You might as well just burn it. How about instead of ruining a perfectly good book by being a completely moronic Neanderthal, you just buy a ream of paper and get it cut and bound to fit where you want it to.
Now where in my library which houses literally hundreds of reference books is the one with that title____________? I've decorator homes and I'll moidah the foist interior decorator who turns even one book in that direction////What? Oh? Wait~~~~ mirrors, you want to put mirror behind the books so I can read the titles holding another mirror in my hand to see titlles---Great-YOUR nertz-your fired go away
