If you are looking for a twist on wall art, try this witty DIY wallpaper project.

We spotted the perfect alternative to tired wall decor -- use framed wallpaper panels to tell a "story."

Here, a roll of wallpaper featuring a nautical scenic print was divided into sections and then framed. What makes this different from other framed wallpaper projects is that the design depicts a scene, multiple objects or a "story," if you will, rather than a single graphic pattern. Framing intermittent parts of a scene makes it interesting and downright modern.

There are several layers of clever decorating ideas at work here. Wallpaper, frames and wall color all coordinate, and make it look like they all came with the house. Spread the collection on adjacent walls, and you have a museum gallery feel. Get started on your own art collection with the directions below along with some pictorial wallpaper ideas.

What You Need:
- Assorted sized frames. Choose wood frames so they can be painted if desired.
- Wallpaper
- Hanging hardware
- Metal ruler
- X-acto knife
- Spray paint

How to Do It:
- Unroll wallpaper to show two to three repeats of the design.
- Begin placing all of your frames on the wallpaper to visualize what sections you would like to feature. It's okay to overlap or repeat areas.
- Measure and cut out your wallpaper using an X-acto knife and metal ruler as your guide to fit your frame.
- Spray paint the frames a complementary color and set them aside to dry.
- Insert your paper into the frames and hang them on a wall.

Here are a few patterns to consider in your storytelling wall art project.

Poor Carolyn. I liked it--maybe you have no sophistication. What color are the walls in your trailer????

  • jobobahole

i'm with you carolyn, the color is overwhelming, orange, peach, brown, bleck. and the wallpaper "art" ditto. what do you want to bet they pull our comments?

I can see where this idea could go horribly wrong....but it is better than that idea of turning all your books backwards so they all look white...lol

The colors and pictures in the bedroom in this article are not what I would choose because they don't seem restful but they aren't as bad as some people seem to think. Perhaps a difference of opinion like this is what started the sayings "whatever floats your boat" and "different strokes for different folks".

I've seen these same colors in the ghetto.

AND???? So did you change it or do you like living with those colors?

    Dear Maggie:

No one said anything negative about you. Please don't do that to me.

The color looks a little bold but I think any color on the wall with a color taken out of a nice Pic - (maybe a flower patern) would look good . Something that goes with your style. To each his own. I think its a creative, fresh idea. People are so nasty and cridical - lifes to short for all the nasty remarks - just enjoy everyones oppinions thats what makes life interesting .

I agree w/you and Pat it's only a new idea! It is merely a decorating suggestion. As an artist I can appreciate the boldness of the colors, however it is not my personal taste, but still respect those that might choose them. That's why we have hundreds of beautiful colors we can pick from! Who knows, the choice of a one color away gallon of paint could make all the difference. As a side note to Jennifer, if you are replying to magpie (not maggie) I didn't read any comments pertaining to negativity towards you. From your comment, I detected your sarcasim and some negativity on your part. Different strokes for different folks....and so on and so on and...................learn to love all the colors of the world....it'll make you happy!

So, the article was about the framed sections of wallpaper being "wall art." Definitely not about what color scheme they decided to choose to incorporate the wall art into.

For the price of the wallpaper (assuming you don't have half your house loaded up with the junk with extras lying around), you can buy real art produced by local artists. The wallpaper art will ALWAYS look like wallpaper...cheap and tacky when framed. Do yourself a favor, buy LOCAL from LOCAL ARTISTS.

I think it is a great idea, gives the room a great effect.

I think this is a great idea! To those with the negative comments you probably have velvet Elvis pictures or Walmart mountain scenes on your walls - and love it! Get some class! It's cheap and easy to change. Who said anybody had to copy the picture? Where is your individuallity - or self expression?

People you're supposed to move past the colors, obviously, that is subjective. It is the concept here that they are trying to convey..And I think it could be rather cool, if done properly...

Thank you. I agree wholeheartedly. That is exactly what I meant by my comment before..!

I think this is an awsome idea for someone moving into a new home or someone who is a little undecided as to what their decorating scheme is going to be. The frames can be reused once a scheme is decided.
As a licensed decorator,I run into the same question quite often How can I decorate my rental on a tight budget? We must remember not everyone can afford a VanGogh or Monet.
