Brooks Brothers is launching homewares

Brooks Brothers is bringing its iconic look to the home.

Watch out Ralph Lauren: Last week, a spokesman for the menswear powerhouse Brooks Brothers told The Wall Street Journal's Heard on the Runway blog that the company is planning to launch a home furnishings line in the fall.

The fabrics and striped patterns seen in Brooks Brothers clothing will be the inspiration for the pillows, towels, sheets and lampshades in the line. WSJ notes that the 192-year-old company has had these items for a while; however, they were not for sale, rather they were props used in displays, catalog shoots or fashion presentations.

Arthur Wayne, a spokesman for Brooks Brothers, told Heard on the Runway that, "We get asked [about whether the props are for sale] constantly. ... We finally said, let's just offer it."

We wonder if the recent trend of menswear-inspired home goods made the company decide to take the plunge?

Brooks Brothers isn't the only fashionable name to get into the home furnishings market. Read on for more fashion-meets-interiors pairings:

- Zac Posen is designing the interiors of a posh New York City condo building.
- Cindy Crawford is expanding her home line to include outdoor accessories.
- James Perse has created a line of indoor-outdoor furniture.
- Vivienne Tam has ventured into the world of furnishings, as well.

While I think it's great that BB is expanding into new lines, I would highly recommend that they begin to pay attention to maintaining quality of their essential core business since as a long time customer I have beguin to notice an erosion in quality and the attention to detail that one had come to expect of their brand. In my experience a recent cashmere jacket I ordered arrived without buttons, and appeared to be in an unfinished state, with blocking threads still intact on the shoulders, a jacket I ordered a year ago arrived with inside pockets being left unfinished/unstitched so that the lining began to separate, and also instead of using wooden hangers for their jackets, and suits, they are now using very flimsy, easily breakable plastic ones. Had I known that I was going to need to trake the jacket to a tailor to finish the jacket I woiuld have thought otherwise about making a purchase. BB has enjoyed a reputation for predictable quality in the past, that they now seem to be neglecting. In my opinion this new venture will only distract from the core business.

My husband shops Goodwill. He has bought some several Ralph Laren/Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brother and other high end brands. Most of these have been cleaned and starched at the cleaners. Absolutely nothing wrong with these shirts. Most of them look new. Sometimes he gets them half off the already low price. I bought a Botega Veneta handbag for half price-----$1.50!!. It was lightly used but who cares. Yes, you do have to dig through alot of stuff and there can be some strange looking people in the store but its worth it. There are several in Houston but we try to go to the stores close to the better neighborhoods. Better neighborhoods usually means better clothes.
