Installing a unique backsplash can add an instant modern update to your kitchen.

You don't need a renovation-sized budget to give your kitchen a much-needed "brow lift". An updated backsplash can add a certain 'je ne sais quoi' to your kitchen decor -- and we're not talking wallpaper and tile. Check out this roundup of unique backsplash ideas that are sure to give your banal backsplash a fresh face.

1. Chalkboard paint. Never dirty another cookbook mid-preparation! Paint your backsplash with chalkboard paint and you can jot down recipes, grocery lists and gentle reminders for family members. "Honey, please remember the milk." Not only is this a fun way to spice up your kitchen, but it will bring out the creativity in you and your whole family.

2. Colored glass. Remember Tess Lloyd's renovated Sydney home? Her kitchen backsplash was made of a beautiful green-tinted glass that added a special (and necessary) pop of color in her kitchen. Its reflective surface adds depth and nicely reflects light.

3. Vertical tiles. Rectangular tiles have traditionally run on a horizontal, but you can change things up and run them vertically. Not only is this an unexpected pattern, but your eye instantly moves upward.

4. Textured wall flats or wallpaper. Wallpaper and textured panels are also great options. They are sold white so you are in control of the color -- if you want it, that is. Leave them white for a streamlined, simple look or paint them a vibrant shade like magenta for a bold accent. The textured pattern will draw instant interest to your backsplash.

5. Copper and aluminum tile panels. These aren't really tiles, but panels that you cut to fit and use double-sided tape or adhesive to apply. They're easy to install, go up quickly and get the job done without a mess. The best part? They look expensive but in reality, they're way cheaper than tile. And, if you don't like them in 5 years, they're a piece of cake to remove and replace.

I love the vertical tile look. It really makes a kitchen look clean and defines the space! I recently did a post about kitchen backsplashes... they truly add drama and personality!
